HARRISBURG — Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane today announced multistate settlements with two deceptive cancer charities and three executives. The defendants are accused of accepting millions of dollars in donations earmarked for cancer victims and using much of that money for their personal gain. The multistate group of regulators also sued three non-settling defendants. The settlements with the Children’s Cancer Fund of America, the Breast Cancer Society and the three executives will result in combined payments of approximately $914,000. It also permanently prevents the executives — Rose Perkins, Kyle Effler and Jim Reynolds II — from managing charitable assets in the future. “Everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another,” Attorney General Kane said. “That is what makes this so unfathomable. City of Bradford Police will be presenting Aiden with a few things during halftime, and Aiden is expected to say a few words to the crowd as well. On Thursday the Bradford Area High School volleyball team will join thousands of teams from around the country participating in this year's Side-Out Foundation's Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally . Senior players Jessica Buchheit, Hailey Burgess, Courtney Henry, Courtney Holzwarth, Rylee Lundgren and Marissa Yohe are organizing the event as a voluntary community service project. Their team is one of manymiddle school, high school and college teams promoting breast health education in the community as well as raising funds to further research. Dig Pink events give spectators the opportunity to become involved by making donations to the cause and by ?pinking out? the events -wearing pink to show their support. Thursday's event be held in conjunction with the team's match against Elk County Catholic High School. The JV game will start at 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow. The New York Head & Neck Institute at Lenox Hospital in Manhattan, the hospital spearheading Jim Kelly’s cancer treatments and evaluation, released this statement today: Jim Kelly was evaluated yesterday at the New York Head & Neck Institute at Lenox Hospital in Manhattan, three months after having completed the radiation and chemotherapy protocol designed to treat his recurrent sinus cancer. Dr. Peter Constantino, Executive Director of the Institute, stated that, “The treatments so far have completely eliminated Mr. Kelly’s pain, and his level of function has essentially returned to normal. Further, on physical examination, there is no evidence of cancer.” Over the coming week, a series of tests will be performed to determine if any further treatment will be necessary. It’s not too late to be superhero. At least as far as organizers for Miles for Smiles go. “Everyone who participates in our event is a superhero in our eyes,” said event coordinator Rhonda Race. “And this year, we’d like all participants to dress as their favorite superhero, if they are so inclined. We wanted to add another element of fun to our race.” In its third year, Miles for Smiles is a 5K, two-mile walk and Kids Fun Run. Registration will start at the McDowell Fitness Center at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at 8 a.m. Sunday. The race begins at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $15; kids can do the Kids Fun Run for free if accompanied by an adult. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will benefit McKean County Special Olympics and the McKean Unit of the American Cancer Society. Susan Evans will give a presentation on her newly released book, “Don’t Write The Obituary Yet” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Mukaiyama University Room in the Frame-Westerberg Commons. It is being sponsored by the Friends of Hanley Library. In addition to the presentation, the evening will include a question-and-answer period with Evans, which will be moderated by John Schlimm, award-winning author of 15 books and nationally renowned artist, activist and inspirational speaker and television celebrity. Evans, who is in remission from ovarian cancer, wrote the book with her doctor, Dr. Thomas C. Krivak, a noted gynecologist/oncologist in Pittsburgh with the Allegheny Health Network. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced it will hold a public meeting and formal hearing concerning the Ridgway Borough landfill site in Ridgway Township, Elk County, on April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Ridgway Borough building, 108 Main Street, Ridgway. The landfill site consists of about 15 acres that once operated as a mixed waste landfill between the early 1960s and June of 1975. During a department investigation, lead-containing industrial waste and 55-gallon drums containing trichloroethylene (TCE) were encountered in several trenches throughout the landfill. “This is an opportunity for the department to share important information with the public concerning the hazards at this landfill as well as DEP’s planned response,” Staci Gustafson, Acting Northwest Regional Director for DEP said. “We will be answering questions in addition to a formal hearing.” DEP, under the authority of the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, 35 (HSCA), has determined that a ...

A Kane woman who has battled various forms of cancer for the past 16 years is now fighting liver and brain cancer – and she has one wish besides getting well: She wants to be on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Brenda Emer's friends have started a Facebook page called “Let’s Get Brenda on the Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and they are hoping it gets enough attention to make that wish come true. WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to work with Pennsylvania hospitals and healthcare providers to ensure patients in the state are not receiving a counterfeit cancer drug that has flooded the U.S. market. This week it was revealed that the cancer drug Avastin has been counterfeited and distributed throughout the U.S. The drug’s counterfeit version is missing an active ingredient that helps patients fight the disease. Currently the FDA does not know how far the drug, which is used to treat cancers of the colon, lung, kidney and brain, has been distributed. “The idea that a counterfeit cancer drug could enter the U.S. market is shocking and unacceptable,” Senator Casey said. “The FDA needs to step up right away and work with Pennsylvania’s hospitals and healthcare providers to ensure that sick patients aren’t taking this counterfeit drug.
