These birds who didn't fly south for the winter spent some time in this bush this morning -- maybe because it was too foggy for them to fly anywhere else. They shouldn't have to worry about fog tomorrow, but their wings might get a little wet. There's a 90 percent chance of rain on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. The Pittsburgh Pirates will open a new open-air bar and lounge in the right field corner of PNC Park this season as part of a multi-year sponsorship deal with Anheuser-Busch. Budweiser Bowtie Bar will be on the main concourse level just left of the right field grandstands, and will be available to all ticket holders. The Pirates say it should ready by opening day on April 5. It will be the first new bar or restaurant at the ballpark since the Hall of Fame Club replaced Outback Steakhouse in 2008. The old Tuna Mill off Mechanic Street has been destroyed by fire, and firemen are still on the scene of the blaze that was called in at about 10:30. Bradford City, Bradford Township, Derrick City, Lewis Run, Lafayette and Corydon townships and Salamanca are among the fire companies on the scene. Mechanic Street is closed from West Washington Street to Walker Avenue and traffic is tied up in the rest of that area. Please avoid traveling there if possible. Flames from the blaze could be seen in the East Main Street area and ash from the fire was covering cars in the Grace Lutheran Church parking lot. We'll have more information as it becomes available. Students, staff and teachers in the Bradford Area School District gave their annual show of appreciation to school board members during Monday’s meeting. Along with gifts and cards, students performed musical selections and gave brief speeches – some from children of school board members. Also Monday, the board approved the LERTA ordinance passed by Foster Township supervisors in November. LERTA (Local Economic Revitalization Tax Abatement) is a five-year program authorizing local taxing authorities to provide for partial abatement for taxes in order to encourage economic development. The exemption rate will be 100 percent in year one; 80 percent in year two; 60 percent in year three; 40 percent in year four; and 20 percent in year five. Also Monday, the board accepted a $85,910 bid from Blue Bid Bus Sales of Pittsburgh for a 72-pasenger school bus. The other bids were for $86,500 and $89,335. Harrisburg – Michael Zaffuto, the Sykesville Ag and Youth Fair finalist, was the first male ever to best entries from across the state in the Hershey’s® Cocoa Classic Cookie, Brownie or Bar Contest held Saturday, Jan. 7, at the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. Zaffuto’s Strawberry Shortcake Brownies recipe topped 79 entries and won him a $250 prize. As the first male to win the grand prize, the 13-year-old said, “I made it up. I wanted to do something different.” Second place and $100 prize was awarded to Dannah Robosson of Fulton County. Matthew Brown of Elizabeth, Lancaster County took third place and $50 prize. Fourth place went to Jada Yanek of Allentown, and fifth place went to Marlana Knab from the Claysburg Farm Show, Blair County. A panel of five judges sifted through entries scoring them on flavor, texture, creativity and inside and outside characteristics. Charles Cole Memorial Hospital celebrated Hospital Week with a variety of events for staff and the community. High school students from Coudersport, Shinglehouse, Otto-Eldred, Austin, Galeton and Northern Potter visited CCMH to learn about a variety of clinical and non-clinical healthcare careers, education requirements, interviewing skills and future job outlook. The Heart of Cole Community Connections employee giving club presented checks for $200 each to 12 area volunteer EMS companies during an educational breakfast. The HOC Community Connections group chooses a community project every year as a way to give back. Last year, the group donated to area senior centers. During the breakfast the EMS groups also learned from hospital staff about emergency preparedness, medical command, and ventilation/CPAP. Dozens of University of Pittsburgh at Bradford students, joined by staff and faculty, gathered in the cold Bromeley Quadrangle Thursday afternoon for “Stand with Pitt: Rally to Restore the Budget.” The purpose of the rally was to raise awareness of the university’s plight in light of Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed budget, which would cut the state’s contributions to the University of Pittsburgh by 52 percent. Dr. Livingston Alexander, president, spoke at the rally, assuring students that the Pitt system will not close regional campuses and that Pitt-Bradford will not eliminate majors. “We are very optimistic that things will change” during the budget process, he said, but warned that tuition increases are “inevitable” and an attempt will be made to keep increases at a minimum. Alexander and others speaking at the rally also urged those gathered to take their concerns to their legislators through letters, voting and attending Pitt in Harrisbu...
