Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in cooperation with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS), according to U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard. The EAS test will occur on Wednesday, November 9th at 2 p.m., and will be broadcast on all radio and television stations. "This test will ensure the nation is prepared to deliver critical information during a national emergency that can help save lives and keep Americans safe," said Rep. Thompson. "In addition to state and local authorities, EAS is one of a number of systems that can provide information during an emergency. This gives our national emergency response teams the opportunity to assess the readiness and coordination of the current system.” The EAS is a national public warning system that ...

The supply of type O Positive blood dropped suddenly with very heavy use in the past 24 hours. There is still a moderate shortage of other types of blood but type O Positive is quickly dropping to critically low levels. Everyone regardless of blood type is encouraged to come and give blood. The Buffalo Bills unveiled their new uniforms last night at Ralph Wilson stadium. Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly says he likes them because they're similar to the uniforms the team wore when he played. He said he especially likes the fact that they kept the charging buffalo on the helmets. The recent shortage of type O and type A blood is worsening as local patients continue to use more blood than is being given. The past weekend saw a tremendous usage of blood by people suffering serious injuries. Several severe traumas early this week have strained the supply even further. The supply of type O blood (the most common type) is now at critically low levels. The summer is the hardest time for the blood supply and Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally one of the three worst weekends of the year for the blood supply (July 4th & Labor Day are the other two) and the Community Blood Bank trying to get ready early by making sure the local patients who will need blood have it. The blood supply is below last year's level at this time. The Community Blood Bank is open Thursday at Union Square from 3:30 to 7:30pm and Saturday 9-1pm. No appointment is needed to save a life. Six players have been chosen for the 38th annual “Big 30 Don Raabe Charities Classic football game that is scheduled for Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Parkway Field in Bradford. The first 37 games have produced nearly 1.4 million dollars which have been given to numerous charities and personal causes throughout the Twin Tiers. The players chosen are: John Mistretta Running Back Southwestern Central School Height: 5’ 7” Weight: 185 lbs. John was named First Team All League and First Team All State for the 2010 Season and was named Co-M.V.P. in the sectional championship game, as well as, Offensive M.V.P. in the 2008 State Championship Game. Southwestern won two State titles during John’s playing career and he lists those as his greatest thrills on the gridiron. WESB and 100.1 The HERO's annual Wedding Belles contest got underway Wednesday with a reception held at the Masonic Center on South Avenue. Saturday was the first-ever Tortugas Binge Bowl presented by 100.1 The HERO. Igor took on challenger Zach Ruth to see who could eat the most tacos in 15 minutes. First Night Bradford revelers can start the New Year right by participating in a number of First Night Firsts. There are a variety of sites around the Bradford area that feature family-oriented activities. An adult must accompany youths. Admission is free with a First Night button, which are currently on sale. The day starts on Friday, Dec. 31 with a First Movie at the Main Street Movie House. Toy Story 3 will be shown starting at 10 a.m. Take the plunge into the New Year with a First Night Swim from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Bradford Family YMCA. For those looking to be bowled over, there’s a First Night Bowl from 2 to 5 p.m. at Byllye Lanes on Seaward Avenue. There is an extra charge for bowling shoes; the limit is one game. Lace on your ice skates at Callahan Ice Rink from 2 to 5 p.m. for the First Night Skate. There is an extra charge for skate rentals. If art is more your style, we have you covered there, too. A Facebook friend posted this on The HERO's wall and it was too good not to share (even though -- Yes, I'll admit it -- I'm a Bills fan). Orchard Park, NY -- Buffalo Bills practice was cancelled today due to an unknown white substance on the field. Police and investigators were called in and after several minutes of testing they determined it to be the GOAL-LINE!!!!! But since most of the players had never seen it before, and probably won't see it again, it was determined that it poses no threat!!

Each August since 1998, Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List. It provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall. The creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and former Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it was originally created as a reminder to faculty to be aware of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation. From entertainment in the East Main Street gazebo ... to pony rides in Kiddyland ... to hanging out with friends ... or even just takin' a snooze, the 9th Annual Stinkfest had something for everyone. The main event, though, is always the leek cuisine. Always a popular stop -- the East Bradford fire station for the leek dip contest. Sausage and leek sandwiches were one of the hot items for lunch.
