The Friends of Hanley Library received the University of Pittsburgh Library System “Friends of ULS” Award during an in-service day for all librarians in the Pitt system held earlier this month. The award recognizes individuals or groups who have made a contribution to a university library. The Friends of Hanley Library formed in 1990 and have actively supported the library on the Bradford campus since its inception through fundraising and programs. Over the years, the Friends have donated artwork, books, furnishings and equipment. Their donations have benefited students, faculty and staff by providing needed material to support the campus curriculum and refresh library spaces to create inviting, comfortable areas for research and study. Pitt-Bradford will hold the seventh annual Empty Bowls and Baskets Dinner of homemade soup and bread to heighten awareness of the fight against hunger and to raise money for the Friendship Table. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door. Diners are invited to take home a hand-painted ceramic bowl, handcrafted basket or hand-sewn cloth napkins as a reminder that someone else’s bowl might be empty. To date, close to $8,855 has been raised to benefit the Friendship Table. Dr. Holly J. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will honor 20 staff members at a dinner next week who are celebrating service anniversaries. Three employees will be honored for 35 years of service to the university, Dr. K. James Evans, vice president and dean of student affairs; Thomas J. Sheeley, maintenance worker; and Cindy Cavallero, administrative assistant and office manager for student affairs. Dr. Holly J. Spittler, associate dean of student affairs and director of career services, will be recognized for 30 years of service. Linda K. Delaney, assistant director of sponsored programs and manager of payroll, will be honored for 20 years of service. Those being honored for 15 years of service are Elizabeth A. By Kimberly Marcott Weinberg Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing A University of Pittsburgh at Bradford nursing professor and student left today for a medical mission in Cameroon, West Africa. Tammy Haley, coordinator of the Bachelor of Science in nursing program at Pitt-Bradford, and Amy Silvis, a nontraditional nursing student from Bradford, will be making the trip with Christina Siewe, a nurse and native of Cameroon. Siewe and her sister, who is also a nurse, founded the Good Samaritan Clinic in their childhood home in Ekona, a town of about 23,000 in the interior of Cameroon. Siewe has lived in the United States for many years, and she and her husband, Dr. Youmasu Siewe, came to Bradford when Dr. Siewe became the director of the Center for Rural Health Practice at Pitt-Bradford. Three students from Bradford Regional Medical Center’s School of Radiography have been awarded annual Bradford Hospital Auxiliary scholarships. Second-year students Lauren McKee of Titusville and Shruti Thakkar of Norwich, Conn., were selected to share the Auxiliary’s Clinical Excellence Award. Each student received a $375 scholarship. In announcing these awards, Dr. Holly Spittler, a member of the School of Radiography’s Advisory Board and the Auxiliary’s Scholarship Committee, said, “This year the award will be shared by two individuals whose clinical skills are truly outstanding. According to the committee, these two students operate at the same high level of competence in the clinical setting and to recognize one and not the other would be unfair.” She added, “The fact two students have been chosen for this award is truly a reflection of the strength of the entire class.” Both students will graduate from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford with a bachelor’s degree in radiologi...
