Washington, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), released the following statement after he chaired the JEC hearing which he called on gas prices. “With gas prices nearing $4 a gallon, it is important to that we take a close look at how these refinery closures will affect Pennsylvanians and consumers across the nation”, said Senator Casey. “With limited pipeline capacity to import from the Gulf Coast, this loss of refining activity in the Northeast will increase the region’s dependence on foreign fuel and lead to higher prices for consumers.” The hearing was entitled “Gas Prices in the Northeast: Potential Impact on the American Consumer Due to Loss of Refining Capacity.” The hearing focused on the impact potential closures of petroleum refineries serving the Northeast could have on prices at the pump in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. The average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline in Western PA is $3.333. This current price is a half penny more than the previous week. According to AAA’s Fuel Gauge, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil finished down at $97.77 at the close of formal trading on the NYMEX Monday. The drop was attributed to the ongoing dismal outlook for the global economy, particularly in the euro zone where sovereign debt concerns remain front of mind. This sentiment resulted in global equities markets turning lower, while the U.S. dollar strengthened relative to foreign currencies. The same factors that have impacted crude prices for the last several months continued to exert pressure on prices last week, as global economic malaise and demand destruction remained the primary focus of traders. Washington, D.C. - The House Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday held a Full Committee markup on three energy bills cosponsored by Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson. Wednesday's markup comes as energy experts predict gasoline prices could reach $5 per gallon by Memorial Day weekend and continue to warn that “$4-a-gallon gas fueling fears for recovery,” as reported in Wednesday's Washington Post. Thompson released the following statement after completion of Wednesday's markup. “The steady climb in gas prices under the Obama Administration has taken a toll on Pennsylvania’s 5th District and left families and small businesses more vulnerable to oil price spikes. Bradford City Council on Tuesday passed two resolutions to address the city's budgetary problems. First, the city is submitting a Fleet Credit Card Application to buy E-85 Flex Fuel for all city vehicles that can use it. Wednesday afternoon, E-85 was 50 cents cheaper than regular gasoline. Also, any purchase expected to be more than $50 has to have prior approval from the city clerk or deputy city clerk. Because of a decrease in timber revenues, the city is looking at a budget shortfall of between $300,000 and $500,000. Also during Tuesday's meeting, council awarded a contract to I.A. Construction for paving Kennedy and Boylston streets. The $109.5 million project is being funded with 2008 Community Development Block Grant money. In other matters, City Clerk John Peterson wanted to remind contractors that the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act goes into effect on July 1, and they must be registered with the state. Crosby's/Tim Horton's store manager Crystal Payne cuts the ribbon on the E85 pump at the Foster Brook Crosby's fueling station Friday afternoon. Reid Petroleum President Paul Quebral (wearing a suit) says this is the only E85 pump from Buffalo to Pittsburgh. The Crosby's celebration continues Saturday as Scott Douglas broadcasts live from the store on 100.1 The HERO from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our condolences to Doug Galli, who couldn't be at the ribbon cutting because of the death of his father.

Crosby’s and Reid Petroleum will mark an environmental milestone on Friday, May 15 with the launch of Bradford’s first E85 fuel station at the new Crosby’s site at 1002 East Main Street and Derrick Road in Foster Brook. A ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the occasion at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon along with comments from General Manager and Vice-President of Crosby’s, Doug Galli, and the President of Reid Petroleum, Paul Quebral. E85 is the term for motor fuel blends of 85 percent ethanol and just 15 percent gasoline. E85 is an alternative fuel as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. “We are very excited to be a part of the introduction of ethanol fuel into Bradford and McKean County. Crosby’s has always looked to the future in our store development and what we offer to our customers. Giving the people of McKean County the option to purchase a fuel that has been proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is another example of our focus on the future.” said...

The Foster Brook Crosby's re-opened its fuel tanks on Friday -- including the first E85 tank in McKean County, and north of Interstate 80. The official ribbon cutting ceremony at the new dispenser will be May 15. Scott Douglas will be doing a live broadcast from Crosby's/Tim Horton's on May 16 on 100.1 The HERO, The Rock Station of the Twin Tiers. E85 is an alternative fuel that shows superior performance characteristics and burns cleaner than gasoline. It's also renewable and domestically produced.

Here's another sign that the Bradford area will forever be tied to the fuel industry. As most people know Bradford has the oldest continuously operating oil refinery in the country. Now, when the fuel pumps are re-opened at the Foster Brook Crosby's next month, it will be the first location in Pennsylvania north of Interstate 80 selling E85. The ethanol-based fuel has proven to pose fewer environmental risks by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. 100.1 The HERO will be broadcasting live from Crosby's for the weekend-long celebration.

Work continues on the "new" Crosby Mart and Tim Horton's on East Main Street in Foster Brook, while gas prices at the convenience store continue to decline.
