The Laughing Owl Press Co. is hosting an Interactive Art Show to benefit Kane Area School District art classes, grades K-12 at the Thomas L. Kane Memorial Chapel. Come enjoy music by The Moon Whistlers while viewing an art exhibit featuring Brooke Balliet, Sara Aiello, Cathy Sirianni, select KASD students, and other talented artists. Light hors d’ouvres will be served. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Laughing Owl Press and at the door.

A writing student at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has recently been recognized and published online. Isaac Payne, a sophomore English and writing major from Kane, attended the Alpha Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Writing Workshop in Greensburg in August. During the 11 days that he was there, he met with critically acclaimed speculative fiction authors Tamora Pierce, Alyssa Wong, Daniel Jose Older, E. C. Myers, and worked with other staff members invested in the field. The purpose of this workshop was to develop writing skills for improving speculative short stories, and to gain feedback from peers and staff. Payne used the knowledge gained at Alpha in order to earn an Honorable Mention in the 2017 Writer’s of the Future Award for his short story “The Pursuit of Luck,” which also appears in the 2018 edition of Baily’s Beads. The Eleventh Annual Art in the Wilds is returning to Kane, PA this summer and fine artists and fine craftsmen are invited to submit an application to the show!  This outdoor, juried fine arts event will be held on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 from 10 AM to 5 PM each day in beautifully wooded Evergreen Park right in the center of town!  Kane is a small town in northwestern PA that is surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest.  It is part of the Wilds Cooperative of Pennsylvania and PA Route 6 Artisan Trails and is a beautiful drive from any direction. The 2016 show was a great success, attracting over 6,000 visitors who purchased more than 1,300 separate original art pieces. Bradford High’s Ashton McGriff broke the school record in the 400 during Friday’s PIAA Track & Field championships in Shippensburg. She not only broke the previous record set in 1996 – she shattered it by nearly a full second. And, she’s only a freshman. Unfortunately, she just missed out on a berth in the finals. Special Olympics athletes from throughout McKean County will travel to Kane Area High School on Wednesday, May 6, to compete in the annual Special Olympics/Zippo Track & Field Meet. Over 230 special athletes, ranging from 5 to 71 years of age, are registered to participate at the 40th annual event. Starting time is 10:00 a.m. In case of rain, the meet will be postponed to May 7. Event director is Ashley Komidar, teacher at Kane Elementary School. Up to six athletes can qualify to represent McKean County at the Pennsylvania Special Olympics State Games at Penn State, June 4-6. McKean Special Olympics coordinator Pat Ryan noted, “The track meet is our biggest competition of the year and our athletes have been working hard in training for this event.” Volunteers are needed to help with the meet. The Bradford City Water Authority along with Zippo President and CEO Greg Booth will be honored by the YMCA of the Twin Tiers with the organization’s George G. Blaisdell Community Service Award. The awards presentation will be during the annual breakfast on May 5 at Pitt-Bradford. Also, the 2015 Ray C. Uhler Outstanding Youth Award recipients have been named. They are Sarah Potter from Bradford Area High School, Lauren Kerr, Otto-Eldred; Dillon Mattis, Kane; Keenan Kost, Smethport; and Jefferson Stehle, Port Allegany. Two Wilcox women are dead following a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of routes 219 and 321 in Elk County. State police say an SUV driven by 81-year-old Vera Johnson was traveling south on 219 when it didn’t stop for a stop sign and traveled into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by 37-year-old Steven Kilduff of Brookville. Johnson and her passenger, 92-year-old Rose Swanson, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Kilduff was not hurt. Route 321 between Kane and Wilcox was closed for about four hours. The Arlington Hotel’s hotel liquor license has been revoked. State police say the business at 15 Fraley Street in Kane is not a bona fide hotel because there aren’t enough rooms for guests, and they are inadequately equipped. The date of the violations was from September 1 through 20. An administrative law judge ordered the revocation on Thursday. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

The hearing for a Ludlow teenager who was driving a car involved in an accident that killed a high school student last summer has been moved to next month. 18-year-old Dylan Yasurek of Ludlow is charged with homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence of a controlled substance in connection to the death of 17-year-old Tristan Sauers of Ludlow, who was a senior a Kane Area High School. Police say Yasurek was speeding on Gibbs Hill Road at around 6:45 p.m. on August 23 when the car went off the road, spun around and hit a large tree. Sauers was pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. Yasurek is free on unsecured bail. His preliminary hearing that had been scheduled for today is now scheduled for February 23. A jury came back with a split decision in the trial of a probation officer accused of making sexual advances toward at least three women he was supervising. 38-year-old Jeffrey Collins of Kane was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault, two counts of official oppression, and one count of harassment. He was found not guilty of one count of indecent assault and count of harassment. The jury was deadlocked on another count of indecent assault. While working as a probation officer in Warren County, Collins was accused of exposing his genitals and engaging in sexual activity in front of one of the women while she was in his office. He also allegedly asked them to take photos or videos of themselves having sex in exchange for favorable consideration involving their probation. Collins’ lawyer argued that the women – quote – wanted it until it became inconvenient. He also compared the situation to that of former President Bill Clinton, saying he was never charged and obviously had ...

Jessica Gabriel has been named assistant vice president of Northwest Savings Bank. James Swanson, vice president, Deposit Operations, made the announcement. In her role, Ms. Gabriel will continue to manage the IRA/HSA, Deposit Services, Reporting Services, Research and Returned Mail departments of the bank. She will also assume responsibility of Deposit Administration. Ms. Gabriel will continue to oversee employees in the Operations Department’s management trainee program. Ms. Gabriel joined Northwest in June 2002 as a management trainee in the Investment Management and Trust Department. She served as a Trust Officer until her move to the Operations Department in 2008. She earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Penn State University Erie, The Behrend College. Ms. Gabriel recently completed, with honors, the Pennsylvania Bankers Association’s Advanced School of Banking. A man is accused of lying to police during a traffic stop this morning. Police stopped Victor Lushbaugh of Kane at 7:47 a.m. for a stop sign violation and, when they asked him for identification, he didn’t have any with him and didn't give them his real name. Quick Stop Sally is missing. The owners of the Quick Stop Market in Kane bought Sally the mannequin near the end of summer and put her out in front the store, where employees dressed her for the seasons. She was taken at 11 o’clock Monday night, and you can see surveillance video of the mannequin-napping on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/1490wesb . A 41-year-old man already in McKean County Jail for sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl is facing more charges – including rape. Police say Joseph Allen Snyder of Kane sexually abused the victim in late November at a home in the borough. On November 26 police filed charges of indecent assault of a person younger than 13 and corruption of minors. Additional felony counts of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, and unlawful contact with a minor have now been field. A Kane man was hurt when his pickup truck went off an icy road and hit a tree this morning. Police say 65-year-old James Shay was on Route 66 in Highland Township at 11:45 a.m. when the truck went out of control on curve, left the road and hit a tree. Shay was taken by ambulance to Kane Community Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

UPDATE from state police: The incident happened at 7:12 a.m. in Hamlin Township (the Mount Jewett area) while students were waiting for their bus. Troopers strongly encourage parents to accompany their children while they wait for their bus. Police ask that anyone with information about this incident call 814-778-5555. The Kane School District has sent a message to parents saying an unmarked white van tried to pick up a student in the Mount Jewett area this morning. The student did not recognize the driver and ran away. All the buses and vans the school district uses are marked. State police believe this is credible and are investigating. We're not sure yet if this is related to the incidents in Foster Township and the Mount Jewett area in September of last year. They also involved a white van. Charges against a Kane man accused of threatened to kill another man last month have been bound to McKean County Court following a preliminary hearing this afternoon. 49-year-old Darryl Kring is accused of going into another person’s home and starting a fight with a 58-year-old man who lives there. Police say Kring grabbed the man by the throat a number of times and said he was going back to his house to get his shotgun and then come back and finish the job. After the victim called police they surrounded Kring’s house and were able to take him into custody without further incident. He’s free on unsecured bail. A Bradford nurse practitioner accused of writing prescriptions she wasn’t authorized to write waived a preliminary hearing in Kane today. The state attorney general’s office says 54-year-old Darlene Venezia Skaggs wrote two prescriptions for Oxycodone at her home, and then met a former patient and gave the prescriptions to him. She had been terminated from Medicor Associates at the time she wrote the prescriptions. According to court papers, she said she wrote them because the man “legitimately needed them.” She is facing similar charges in five other cases. Venezia-Skaggs remains free on unsecured bail.
