Tanker Crashes Near Kinzua Dam
UPDATE: 3:30 PM -- Route 59 has re-opened. UPDATE: PennDOT says the road will be closed at least until "early evening." They have posted detours using US Route 6 and Route 321. A tanker carrying diesel fuel crashed on Route 59 just east of Wolf Run Marina this morning. The driver was able to get out safely, with only minor injuries, but the tank is leaking. State police say they expect to keep one lane of the road open. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947
Dam Water Being Released
Boaters and anglers on the Allegheny Reservoir are being advised to use extra caution over the next few days because the US Army Corps of Engineers is releasing more water from the Kinzua Dam than usual due to heavy rainfall over the last few days. Dam resource manager Doug Helman says they need to bring the water level down so there’s enough room in the reservoir when the next heavy rainfall hits. He said it takes three or four days for the water level in the reservoir to drop so, during that time, boaters and anglers will experience higher water levels. Allegheny River Level to Remain High
Significant outflow from the Allegheny Reservoir will continue through Sunday, and the Allegheny River will continue to flow at or near full conditions until then. The US Army Corps of Engineers at the Kinzua Dam says the reservoir level has to be lowered to maintain adequate storage space for possible future floods. Route 59 Near Dam Still Closed
Route 59 in Warren County will be closed for several more hours following a tanker rollover near Kinzua Dam this morning. The tanker was carrying asphalt, and crews are still working to clean it up. A detour using Route 321 is in place. PennDOT says Route 59 should re-open at about 8 o’clock tonight. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947
Shell Appalachia Contributes to
Big Bend Recreation Area Project
Penn Soil RC&D Council announced today the completion of the paving of the Riverside Watchable Wildlife Trail and the receipt of a $5,000 donation from Shell Appalachia in support of the project at the Big Bend Recreation Area at the Kinzua Dam. Wes Ramsey, Executive Director of Penn Soil RC&D, Doug Helman, Kinzua Dam Resource Manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Bill Massa, special projects coordinator of the Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC), accepted the contribution on behalf of the project partners from Becki Ivancic, Communications Representative and Joe Minnitte, Community Liaison Officer with Shell Appalachia. Willow Bay, Other Campgrounds to Close
Concession sites in the Allegheny National Forest – including Willow Bay and all other campgrounds – have been given 48 hours to close because of the federal government shutdown. The forest supervisor contacted Allegheny Site Management today about closing. Law enforcement and fire personnel are exempt from a shut down, but all so-called non-essential services in the ANF are closed down, or will be soon. Government employees are still manning the Kinzua Dam because it’s an essential operation of the US Army Corps of Engineers, but the dam will not be open to tourists during the government shut down. First Energy Wants to Sell
Seneca Pumped Storage
First Energy has asked the federal government for permission to sell 11 hydroelectric power generation stations, including Seneca Pumped Storage at Kinzua Dam. According to a news release First Energy wants to sell stations in West Virginia and Virginia as well as Pennsylvania that could generate 527 megawatts of power all together. Seneca Pumped Storage counts for 451 megawatts of that total. One megawatt equals one million watts. First Energy’s total capacity is about 20,000 megawatts. No jobs will be lost in the sale to Harbor Hydro Holdings. The Seneca Nation is competing for the license application for the station, and the government’s OK for the sale is contingent upon settlement of that issue. The Nation has not commented yet.
