Several hundred gallons of fuel spilled after a truck crashed on Route 770 Wednesday morning, injuring the driver and closing the road for several hours. When the truck crashed at just before 11:30 a.m. between Custer City and Songbird Road diesel fuel, motor oil, transmission fluid, gear lube and hydraulic oil spilled onto the road. Emergency crews built overflow dams to contain the fluid. The Dallas-Morris Well Services truck was being driven by 21-year-old Daniel Gerhart of Roulette. He lost control of it while negotiating a curve, and the truck went off the road, where it hit an embankment and some trees. Gerhart was flown to ECMC in Buffalo as a precaution, and was released a few hours later. Dallas-Morris says DEP is satisfied with the cleanup, but will continue monitoring the site. Richard Dana "Rick" Benton, 68, of 29 Charlotte Ave. Bradford, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Hamot Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born December 7, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of the late Oscar Freeman and Virginia (Dana) Benton. Mr. Benton was a 1961 graduate of Bradford High School and a 1965 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a B. S. in Social Studies education. He also received a Masters of Arts in History from IUP and a Curriculum Specialist/Supervisor Certificate from St. Bonaventure. Mr. Benton was employed by the Bradford Area Schools as a teacher and Dept. Head for over 37 years. After retirement he was employed as a Director of Community Affairs for Dallas-Morris Drilling Company, Inc. and as a member of Bradford City Council. We’ve heard it before: The Kennedy Street Bridge is one step closer to being replaced. This time, however, a company has been hired to do the work. The L.C. Whitford Company Inc. of Wellsville, N.Y., submitted the lowest of five bids for the job at $444,436. PennDOT opened the bids on December 2, and Bradford City Council authorized execution of the contract on Tuesday. Also during Tuesday’s meeting, council authorized a contract with E & M Engineers for $100,644 for design of the School Street Elementary Safe Routes to School project. Council also agreed to execute an agreement with Habiterra Architecture to provide design and related enhancements to the Kessel Athletic Complex for $152,000. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will reimburse the city for the cost of the engineering services. More than 130 special athletes from McKean, Warren, Elk and Cameron counties gathered at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sport and Fitness Center pool today for the annual Special Olympics Swimming Invitational, Sponsored by Dallas-Morris. The invitational is the culmination of the swimming season for most of the athletes, who have been in training for several months for this event. Seven swimmers, whose names will be announced, will advance to the Pennsylvania Special Olympics Summer Games at Penn State, June 10-12. Over 130 special athletes are registered to compete in the annual Special Olympics Swimming Invitational, Sponsored by Dallas-Morris, which will be held at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sport and Fitness Center on Friday, Mar. 5, starting at 10:00 a.m. Special Olympians from McKean, Warren, Elk and Cameron counties have been in training for several months in preparation for the competition, according to meet director Carol Ryan. They will be competing for medals in individual and team events. “The swimming invitational is one of the biggest Special Olympics events of the year and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” said Ryan. “We’re excited and expect the level of competition to be the best ever.” Up to seven swimmers will qualify to compete at the Pennsylvania Special Olympics Summer Games at Penn State, June 10-12. Dallas-Morris Drilling, on behalf of the Bradford Oil 150 Committee, is sponsoring an Open History Writing Contest. Everyone expect members of the Oil 150 Committee and employees of Dallas-Morris and their immediate families may enter the contest. The topics must relate to the Bradford Oil Field, either in Pennsylvania or New York. The essay can be on a person, family, company, lease, well or on a general topic like drilling, shooting a well, production figures or on a specific time period from 1871 to today. Prizes are 1st Place: $200; 2nd Place: $100; 2 Honorable Mention Awards: $50. Judges are Rick Benton, Larry Stillman and Joe Connklin. All are current or former instructors in state & local history at Bradford Area High School. Contest rules and entry forms are available at the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce, Bradford Landmark Society, Main Street Merchantile and Bradford Area Public Library.

The 2009 Bradford Mastercraft All-American Soap Box Derby got underway Saturday in a new location -- Dorothy Lane and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Besides Mastercraft, other sponsors for the event are American Refining Group, Dallas-Morris Drilling, Zippo, the Blaisdell Foundation, City of Bradford, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and 100.1 The HERO. Besides the racers, pictured above are The HERO's Stefan Arlington who served as a PA announcer for the event and Frank Williams who spoke with Dr. David Johe during The HERO's broadcast. Dr. Johe is also the 1965 Soap Box Derby Champion for Charleston, West Virginia. Congratulations -- and thank you! -- to the local derby board of directors for another great year. Dallas-Morris Drilling is among the companies that have joined with OSHA to form the Appalachian Oil and Gas Safety Consortium. The alliance is designed to promote workplace safety and health among companies in the oil and natural gas industry that are operating in the Appalachian Basin. Through the alliance, OSHA will work with industry partners and the University of West Virginia Education Center to develop training and educational programs for employees involved in exploration, drilling, extraction, servicing, and distribution of oil and natural gas. A major goal of the alliance is to develop training materials that include OSHA 10-hour, 30-hour and train-the-trainer courses focused on different aspects of the oil and natural gas industry to include site preparation, drilling and production. Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) is several thousand dollars closer toward purchasing an Evita XL ventilator from Draeger Medical Inc. because of three donations made to the Bradford Hospital Foundation. The donations were from Kids & Cancer, $4,000; Dallas-Morris Drilling Inc., $1,000; and Zonta Club, $565. Shown (from left) in the photo are Fran James, Zonta Club president; Bridgette Wells, community affairs coordinator at Dallas-Morris; Elayna Oaks, a Bradford Area High School senior who’s continuing the “First Breath” fundraising campaign to purchase the ventilator for BRMC; and Ken Eddy and Gage Brien, Kids & Cancer committee members. The donations were made Wednesday at The Print Shop on Barbour Street. All totaled, $10,730 has been raised toward purchasing the ventilator.
