A community wide National Night Out event will be held Tuesday, August 2nd from 5PM until 8PM in recognition of the 28th annual National Night Out. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National Night Out (NNO) was conceived with the aim of empowering community residents, and as a unique tool against criminal and drug activity. Along with traditional displays of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, celebrations of National Night Out also feature activities such as block parties, cookouts, parades, flashlight walks, exhibits, contests, youth programs and visits from local police and fire departments. Goals of National Night Out include creating a heightened awareness of crime and drug prevention efforts, as well strengthening neighborhood spirit. NNO 2010 involved over 37 million people in over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. Bradford City Police Chief Mike Close is retiring Wednesday after being accused of assaulting a woman early Sunday morning. State police say Close hit 36-year-old Amy Baker, causing minor injuries to her lower lip. Close then left the scene, but later turned himself in at District Judge Rich Luther's office, where he was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment. He's free on $5,000 bail. Mayor Tom Riel told WESB and The HERO this morning that he's in no hurry to name a new chief, and it could be weeks if not months before a new chief is in place. Close has been with the city police department for 20 years and has been chief since January 7, 2008. Under his leadership, the department set up the Emergency Response Team, Street Crimes Unit and an anonymous tip line. He also helped the department get grant money for equipment including tasers, cameras, a polygraph machine, Segways and breathalyzers. Bradford City Police Officers Chris Lucco and Steve Green show some of their gear to people during National Night Out activities Tuesday. Emily Marshall entertained the crowd in Veterans Square, which included the delightful Hatcher family (minus Josh). These kids enjoy the giant slide at the Kids Carnival sponsored by the First United Methodist Church and the YMCA. Elm Street Manager Lisa Campogiani took time to pose with daughter Gabby and doggie before the pet parade. Ginny Hauser had her hands full with her (and husband Chris's) dogs so she got help from "aunt" Mary Anne Polucci-Sherman. Jay Monti and Blou were grand marshals for the parade. Heidi Mackowski and Tony Danias of the McKean County SPCA also participated, as did many other dogs. Linda Newman made sure her husband Dave got something to eat from Taste of Bradford in Veterans Square before he headed off to the pet parade.

A local favorite event will return to downtown Bradford! The Taste of Bradford will be held on Tuesday, August 4 from 5 – 8 p.m. in Veterans’ Square and will involve a variety of Bradford area restaurants as well as local musicians and singers, and a live broadcast on 100.1 The HERO. The event is being held in conjunction with the community wide second annual National Night Out. Local restaurants will serve smaller sized portions of their various menu items. People attending the event can ‘taste’ and enjoy a wide variety of foods. “This event is a lot of fun because people can sample menu items from several different restaurants,” said Main Street Manager, Anita Dolan. “It is a great way for restaurants to reach potential new customers.” The event will also involve live entertainment.
