Four people have been arrested after a months-long investigation by the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force into cocaine and marijuana sales on the Alfred State campus. Of the four, only an 18-year-old from Jamestown is accused of selling cocaine. Marcus Thomas is charged with criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance. Alfred State College President John Anderson is leaving that post to take over the reins at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. The appointment was announced Friday by the State System of Higher Education. Anderson was chosen following a national search, and will take over on April 1. He will succeed Francine McNairy, who is retiring next month after nearly 10 years as Millersville’s president. Anderson has been president of Alfred State since 2008. A fraternity at Alfred State College has been suspended after its Greek letters were painted over a roadside mural dedicated to a soldier killed in Afghanistan. Kappa Sigma Epsilon has been temporarily suspended while the school investigates the matter. Friends of Army Sgt. Devin Snyder of painted her image and an American flag on a large rock alongside Interstate 390 in Livingston County. She died last June during an attack that killed three other soldiers. ALFRED, NY -- Alfred State College has announced that it has closed admissions for fall 2010, meaning that no additional applications will be considered for the upcoming semester. The College anticipates its largest enrollment in decades with many programs already on waiting lists. The growth is attributed to the fact that Alfred State College is an excellent value with quality programs and graduates enjoy a placement and transfer rate of 99 percent. According to College President Dr. John M. ALFRED, NY, — Nearly 900 two- and four-year graduates, their families, professors, and friends will be on hand Sunday, May 16 at noon, as Alfred State College honors its 99th graduating class. Commencement exercises are scheduled to be held at McLane Center on neighboring Alfred University campus. Graduates will need to use the tickets in their graduation packets for their families’ admission. Presiding over the ceremony will be Dr. John M. Anderson, college president. Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Alfred State College alumnus William H. Goodrich,’84, president and CEO of LeChase Construction, Rochester. The Alfred State College Drama Club will present the play Extremities, Friday and Saturday, Feb.19 and 20, at 7 p.m. in the Orvis Auditorium on the Alfred campus. The play is open to the public free of charge; no tickets are necessary. The play is rated “R” for strong sexual situations, language, and violence, and is not be suitable for children under 17. Written by William Mastrosimone, Extremities examines what happens when somebody tries to take back control of his/her own life in one of the most harrowing situations imaginable. A young woman, Marjorie, is attacked in her home by a would-be rapist, Raul, and manages to turn the tables on him, tying him up in her fireplace. WELLSVILLE, NY, -- Students enrolled in the culinary arts programs at Alfred State College will prepare a Mardi Gras celebration, featuring a New Orleans-style menu, on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 5-7 p.m., in the student cafeteria of the Culinary Arts Building on the Wellsville campus. Masked wait staff will serve patrons at tables decked out in bright colors designed to evoke a Mardi Gras atmosphere; musical jazz selections will provide additional ambience. Guests will receive complimentary Mardi Gras beads in the traditional colors of green, gold, and purple. Cost of the event is $15 for adults; $7 for children 10 and under. Proceeds from the event, which is sponsored by the Top Hat Club (the culinary honor society), will benefit the Club’s Activity Fund.
