  Dr. Donald Ulin, associate professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, has edited and annotated a book of letters from a 19th-century Quaker woman living on the Ohio frontier to her family in England, including Mary Howitt, one of the most popular writers of her day.             “Writing Home: A Quaker Immigrant on the Ohio Frontier,” published by Bucknell University Press covers five years of letters from Emma Alderson, ranging from messages of longing for her family written while still docked off Liverpool, England, to descriptions of ante-bellum Cincinnati, where she and her husband settled after a journey by canal to Pittsburgh and a posh steamship trip down the Ohio River.             The letters, Ulin said, describe in depth many of the experiences of immigrants at the time – a two-month voyage by sailing ship, the challenges of winter, first impressions of a new land and people, the trials o...

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold its popular annual One World Cultural Festival Feb. 24. The festival celebrates the many different cultures represented by the Pitt-Bradford student body, faculty and staff and the surrounding community. This year’s celebration will feature the band Erie-based band One World Tribe and the theme “We are one.” Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Frame-Westerberg Commons. Food from four regions (Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America) will be served at tasting stations with authentic recipes coming from student members of the Cultural Festival planning committee. The Friends of Hanley Library at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will present its 22nd annual “Season’s Readings” on WESB’s LiveLine program next week. The show, which can be heard at 1490 AM, will be broadcast at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Following up on his reading two years ago of the first half of Truman Capote’s short story, “A Christmas Memory,” Dr. Donald Ulin will read the conclusion of the story, in which the narrator, Buddy, is enrolled in military school. This poignant and evocative short story is based on Capote’s autobiographical recollection of his last Christmas spent with an elderly woman who was his distant cousin and best friend. The narrative, as told through the eyes of a 7-year-old boy, touches on friendship, family, loneliness and loss. The annual radio readings on WESB began with the late Dr. Robert C. The Friends of Hanley Library at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will present its 21th annual “Seasonal Readings” on WESB’s LiveLine Wednesday, Dec. 11. The show, which can be heard at 1490 AM, will be broadcast at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Donald Ulin will offer a program based on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Christmas Eve sermon from December 24, 1967, just about three and a half months before he was assassinated. The topic of the sermon, in keeping with its occasion, is “Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men.” Listeners will recognize references in this sermon to his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, given 50 years ago in late August during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Dr. Tammy Haley, assistant professor of nursing, has received the 2012 Chairs’ Faculty Teaching award for excellence in teaching at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. “Tammy stands out for her high teaching scores, her leadership in a campus outreach project to help a struggling clinic in Cameroon, Africa, and in the way she brings an analytical, evidence-based nursing approach to Pitt-Bradford students,” said Dr. Mary Mulcahy, associate professor of biology and chairwoman of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences, who nominated Haley. Haley was chosen for the award by the chairmen and chairwomen of Pitt-Bradford’s five academic divisions. In choosing an award recipient, the chairpersons reviewed letters of recommendation, student evaluations of teaching, syllabi and grade distribution. Dr. Don Ulin, associate professor of English, will read excerpts from David McKain’s book, “Spellbound: Growing up in God’s Country.” Published in 1988, McKain’s memoir looks back at his turbulent boyhood years growing up in Bradford. More than three dozen students at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford were recognized for their academic achievements and contributions to campus life at the university’s annual Honors Convocation held Friday, April 16. Before the awards were given, Dr. Don Ulin, associate professor of English, gave the keynote address. Twenty-three students were named University Scholars, an honor given to juniors, seniors and students from the previous year’s graduating class who are or were in the top two percent of their class. Those named University Scholars who were 2009 graduates were Nikolai S. Alpatov, a computer science major from Warren; Debra J.
