Vulgarity-laced incidents Tuesday at Advance Auto on Elm Street and another incident early this morning at McDonald’s landed a DuBois man in McKean County Jail. According to court records 53-year-old Patrick McGarvey became irate and kicked at glass windows at Advance Auto Tuesday morning when employees couldn’t provide him with an allen wrench so he could open the battery box on his scooter. He called one employee a "lazy, fat c***s****r," and "began going after the employees." Police took him to the station, charged him with disorderly conduct and released him. But, he went back to the store at just after 2 in the afternoon and, after being told he wasn’t allowed in the store, yelled and cursed at employees before leaving. He came back a few moments later and yelled, "F*** you, mother f******! I am calling the CEO of this f*****g place ..." At this point, employees walked toward the front door and McGarvey "took off. State police have released the names of the two men involved in last week’s fatal crash on Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys. 29-year-old Michael Hanley of Baltimore, Maryland, the driver of the box truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor trailer, who crossed over into Hanley’s lane and hit his truck head-on, was 42-year-old Shawn Bloom of DuBois. He is still being treated at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh. HARRISBURG – The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) has approved a total of $2,594,832 for eight energy, transportation and water and sewer projects in the 25th Senatorial District, announced Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson). PennDOT will start line-painting operations next week in Clearfield County. On Monday they will be painting lines in both the eastbound and westbound lanes from mile marker 120 in Clearfield County to mile marker 139 in Centre County. On Tuesday, they plan to paint from mile marker 123 in Woodland to mile marker 96 in DuBois. Signs and flashing lights mounted on the back of the moving equipment will warn motorists of the painting operation. PennDOT says motorists should stay eight to 10 car lengths behind the painting equipment to avoid running over wet paint. They say running over wet lines is the only way to get paint on your vehicle. People driving at 70 mph on Interstate 80 can start doing it legally next month – at least on parts of the road. 88 miles of I-80 – from Exit 101 in DuBois to mile marker 189 in Clinton County will have the 70 mph limit starting August 11. News Release: Pennsylvania moved ahead with steps to make travel more efficient today as the Pa. Turnpike activated its 70 mph speed limit from Blue Mountain (Interchange 201) to Morgantown (Interchange 298) and PennDOT announced it will launch 70 mph pilot projects on a pair of interstates next month. “As we increase the speed limit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, motorists need to increase their restraint behind the wheel accordingly,” said Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. “Remember, even though we’re increasing the speed limit, motorists still must obey the law and drive safety. A Derrick City man is facing charges after being stopped on Interstate 80 near DuBois with a load of contaminated food. Police say 19-year-old Ezekeil Groff was driving a commercial vehicle for McKean Transport of Derrick City and transporting seafood, yogurt, and other dairy products. An inspection of the vehicle revealed that the food was not on a shipping order and was being shipped at an unsafe temperature. Police destroyed the food and are continuing their investigation. A tanker truck rolled over in a crash at 6 o’clock this morning on Wilcox Clermont Road at its intersection with Clermont Road. Police say the tanker driven by 59-year-old Robert Coccimiglio of DuBois was turning onto Wilcox Clermont Road went it rolled onto its side, which caused disabling damage. No one was hurt. Seven schools in the 25th Senatorial District have been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to receive Pennsylvania school safety grants, according to Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson). The grants being awarded today are for the Safe School Initiatives Program. The funding will be used by educational institutions to establish and implement plans to prevent and reduce incidents of violence. Each of the schools selected in the 25th Senatorial District will receive the maximum grant award of $25,000. “Ensuring that students and teachers feel safe in their learning environments is a crucial part of helping children to learn and succeed,” Scarnati stated. “I am very pleased that seven area schools have been selected to receive this grant funding. The airline that provides service to Bradford Regional Airport plans to end that service by May 15. Silver Airlines today said it provided the US Department of Transportation with a 90-day notice of its intent to discontinue service between Cleveland and airports in Bradford, Jamestown, DuBois and Franklin, as well as Parkersburg, West Virginia. Dave Pflieger, president and CEO of Silver Airways, said in a news release that “multiple factors have combined to make it economically impossible for us to continue flying” between Cleveland and the five markets. Shortly after Silver’s announcement Senator Bob Casey said he’s committed to ensuring that Northwestern Pennsylvania has access to safe and reliable air transportation. The Office of Career Services, department of nursing and Student Nurse Organization will hold a Health Career Job Fair next week on campus. UPDATE: I-80 has re-opened. Clearfield – PennDOT advises drivers that Interstate 80 westbound near Penfield remains closed due to winter weather. The road is closed from mile-marker 113 to mile-marker 111. Additionally, I-80 eastbound from the DuBois/101 interchange to the Clearfield 120 interchange is now closed due to winter weather. Drivers are being detoured around these closures and PennDOT advises that detour routes are slow moving. PennDOT now expects the roadways to re-open by noon, depending on weather conditions and temperatures. Two people were killed in separate crashes this morning. State police say 56-year-old Brenda Boyer of DuBois died in a head-on crash on Route 36 in Jefferson County at just before 7 a.m. when a car driven by 19-year-old Taylor Cudworth of Sigel crossed the center line. Cudworth was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for treatment of major injuries. Two hours later in Forest County, 67-year-old John Zang of Butler was driving on Route 62 in Tionesta Township when his pickup truck went out of control, hit an embankment and rolled over. While areas like Cleveland, Erie and Buffalo will have only a few wet snowflakes mixing in from time to time, with mostly rain squalls around, favored inland snowbelt regions such as Bradford, Pa., and New York state's Tug Hill Plateau will have moderate to significant accumulation. In fact, by the time Friday morning rolls around, parts of the Tug Hill just east of Lake Ontario could have 3-9 inches of snowfall, which would be the heaviest so far this season, and the greatest amount since last winter. A less significant, though still potentially disruptive 1-3 inches of snowfall is expected in areas such as Jamestown, N.Y., Du Bois, Pa. and Pierpont, Ohio. It was an unusual sight at Penn State DuBois on Wednesday as more than two dozen male students walked together around campus wearing red high heels. The walk also took them off campus, and down Liberty Boulevard, as women showing their support to the cause walked alongside the guys to cheer them on. The men were participating in 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes', a men's march meant to raise awareness of the battle against rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. The event was organized by Passages of Clarion, Clearfield and Jefferson Counties, in conjunction with the Penn State DuBois Office of Student Life. The idea behind the march is to get men more involved in issues surrounding sex crimes. Gov. Tom Corbett has asked the federal government for money to help the state and local governments and nonprofit groups recover from the severe storms that hit several counties – including Clearfield and Jefferson – late last month. Preliminary estimates put the total damage at about $20 million. In a letter to the White House, Corbett says he expects that figure to grow as more claims come in and repair work begins. Corbett, who visited DuBois the day after the flooding, said in his letter that he witnessed the devastation left behind and it’s evident that the communities will need federal assistance to recover. If approved, federal funds could cover 75 percent of the cost of debris removal, emergency services and repairs to public facilities, such as roads, buildings and utilities. Read more here . Those areas included Jefferson County, where Scarnati and Smith both live, as well as Clearfield and Clinton counties. During a news conference in DuBois, one of the hardest hit places, Corbett said the three state leaders had a chance to see some of the damage close up. “Obviously it doesn’t look the same after the fact, when the waters have receded,” Corbett said, adding that he and everyone else was watching the skies, hoping they didn’t see a repeat. Rumbles of thunder could be heard during the news conference and a flood advisory is in effect for that area until 10:30 tonight. Flooding in DuBois this afternoon prompted emergency management officials to close all roads into the city. Jefferson County Commissioners have issued a disaster declaration. Many roads there and in Clearfield County are flooded, and some have been washed out by flood waters.
