The Friends of Hanley Library at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will present its 21th annual “Seasonal Readings” on WESB’s LiveLine Wednesday, Dec. 11. The show, which can be heard at 1490 AM, will be broadcast at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Donald Ulin will offer a program based on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Christmas Eve sermon from December 24, 1967, just about three and a half months before he was assassinated. The topic of the sermon, in keeping with its occasion, is “Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men.” Listeners will recognize references in this sermon to his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, given 50 years ago in late August during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The annual radio readings on WESB began with the late Dr. Robert C. Laing, Jr., professor emeritus at Pitt-Bradford. Harrisburg – Governor Tom Corbett today helped to launch the Central Pennsylvania MLK Day of Service, a community service effort involving hundreds of students from around the capital region as part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “Dr. King’s whole life was spent in service to his fellow citizens,” Corbett said to students assembled at the Camp Curtain School. “This is the day we become agents of change… by helping others and keeping faith with Dr. King’s sacrifice.” Corbett applauded the students for dedicating what would ordinarily be a day off from school to help strengthen their communities. He urged them to continue finding new ways to serve in the future. The Central Pennsylvania MLK Day of Service was established in 2009 to coordinate and assist service projects in the five-county region that had been underway for nearly a decade and to create new service projects to serve the local community. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday as a holiday, and students will observe the leader’s birthday helping to clean the YWCA women’s shelter. In addition, a celebration featuring music, poetry and readings will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel on campus. The celebration is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. The event is being sponsored by Pitt-Bradford’s new Office of Community Engagement, Residential Life and Housing, and the African-American Student Union. Pitt-Bradford will close its administrative offices, and there will be no classes Monday, Jan. 17, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Barry Scott will talk about "Ain't Got Long to Stay Here," a one-man play based on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. The play will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Bromeley Family Theater. Tickets are $10 for the public and free for all students, faculty and staff. The final event in the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will be “Ain’t Got Long to Stay Here,” a one-man play written and acted by Barry Scott and based on the life of King. The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Bromeley Family Theater. Tickets are $10 for the public and free for all students, faculty and staff. During the 90-minute presentation, Scott recreates numerous figures from the Civil Rights era, presenting differing opinions and personalities. The performance is followed by a question-and-answer session. Scott is the founder and producing artistic director of the American Negro Playwright Theater at Tennessee State University and has acting credits nationwide, including on television’s “I’ll Fly Away” and “In the Heat of the Night.” Scott is so convincing in his portrayal of King that Coretta Scott King once complimented him on his realistic and honest depiction of her late husband.
