Medal of Honor recipients Sgt. Sammy Davis and Lt. Col. Harold Fritz took part in Veterans Day ceremonies this morning in Veterans Square in Bradford. At 3:30 this afternoon they will be at the Zippo/Case Museum, where they will install a commemorative Medal of Honor Zippo lighter/Case knife set. The public is invited. On Sunday, November 9th at 10 am Mass, St. Bernard’s Church will celebrate the Living and Deceased Veterans of the United States Armed Services. All veterans and their families are invited to attend. Mass will be followed by a small luncheon with soups, sandwiches and pies in the Parish social center. Parishioners are encouraged to attend this mass in appreciation of all that Veterans have done to preserve our freedom in this country and our freedom to worship our loving God. Two Medal of Honor recipients – a man whose life was saved by a Zippo lighter, and the man known as the “real” Forrest Gump – will be honored at the Zippo/Case Museum on Veterans Day. The two American heroes will install special Medal of Honor commemorative lighter and knife sets at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the museum. Harold Fritz was leading a column of heavily armored vehicles through Quan Loi in 1969 when they were ambushed by North Vietnamese fighters. Thrown from his vehicle, Fritz led a point-blank charge on the enemy and was hit several times by shrapnel and small-arm rounds. One particular blow on the left side of his chest knocked him down. He was evacuated by helicopter, but when he returned to the battlefield later that day, he found a Zippo lighter that had been given to him as a going away present by his wife. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will host a Veterans Day Recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel for all members of the campus and Bradford communities. The event is being co-sponsored by the Office of Community Engagement, Gold Bar Club and the Student Activities Council. The program will feature various patriotic musical selections, prayer and a moment of silence. Dan Robinson, a broadcast communications major from Gifford, will sing the national anthem. Staff Infection, which includes Pitt-Bradford staff members, will perform acoustic versions of “Freedom” by Paul McCartney and “Fortunate Son” by Credence Clearwater Revival. Members of the Bradford community will also perform. Sisters in Spirit members, Christy Danias, Deanna Peters and Claudia Quinn, will sing “American Anthem,” accompanied by Jeanne Gross. Boalsburg - First Lady Susan Corbett today honored Pennsylvania's military men and women by touring the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, Centre County. The museum celebrates the state's rich military history and emphasizes the 20th century roles of Pennsylvania-based units. The First Lady's tour of the museum also kicks off her role as Pennsylvania's "First Tourist." Mrs. Corbett will work with the Department of Community and Economic Development to promote Pennsylvania's diverse tourism industry. On November 11, our nation thanks and honors our veterans. It’s a day to express our gratitude for the many sacrifices that veterans and their families have made in defense of our country and freedom. This week, as the nation celebrated Veterans Day, the Senate took action to boost the employment prospects of veterans and to ensure that veterans get the resources, support and job training they need when they return home. The economic challenges facing veterans today are significant. Nearly 100,000 veterans in Pennsylvania are unemployed. Nationally, the number of jobless veterans is close to 900,000. Among those veterans who have left active duty since September 2001, the unemployment rate is 12.1 percent, significantly higher than the unemployment rate for other veterans and the broader population. A new report from the Joint Economic Committee, which I chair, found that Post-9/11 veterans also face a higher poverty rate than veterans of earlier wars. In 2010, the poverty rate ...

For a veteran, every day is Veterans Day. But when Nov. 11 comes around at the Eldred World War II Museum in Eldred, Pa., it’s a day for everyone to commemorate. The museum, located at 201 Main St., in Eldred, about 80 miles south of Buffalo, N.Y., is offering free admission for Veterans Day for anyone who wants to tour the museum and remember the war between the Allied and Axis powers. Director Steve Appleby said that World War II veterans will be on hand to discuss their experiences in the war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The Eldred WWII Museum is rich in memorabilia from Eldred World War II. The museum, which opened on Memorial Day 1996, is dedicated to the memory of the U.S. fighting forces and the 40 million people on the home front who provided the troops with the war materials they needed. The fact that this museum is located in Eldred is not a coincidence – Eldred was the site of a British and American munitions plat that produced eight million bombs, mortar shells and fuses....

A Veterans Day ceremony was held Thursday morning in Veterans Square in Bradford. It included a 21-gun salute, recognition of each branch of the armed forces and musical selections by the Bradford High Jazz Band.
