New York Times national columnist Dan Barry, ’80, one of St. Bonaventure University’s most honored journalists, has added another award to put on his bookshelf. Barry’s most recent book, “Bottom of the 33rd: Hope, Redemption, and Baseball’s Longest Game,” was honored this month with the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, awarded for a nonfiction book on the subject of sports published in 2011. The award included a $5,000 prize. The book is about the longest game in professional baseball history, played mostly on April 18-19, 1981, between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings of the International League. The final and 33rd inning was played June 23, 1981, after the game was ordered stopped after the 32nd inning at 4:07 a.m. on April 19. Dan Barry, a New York Times columnist and 1980 alumnus of St. Bonaventure University, has once again been honored as a Pulitzer Prize finalist for feature writing. Barry was honored Monday for his portfolio of closely observed pieces that movingly capture how the recession is changing lives and relationships in America. Gene Weingarten of The Washington Post won the feature writing Pulitzer for his haunting story about parents, from varying walks of life, who accidentally kill their children by forgetting them in cars. Barry was also a Pulitzer runnerup in 2006 for his rich series of pieces capturing slices of life in hurricane-battered New Orleans as well as his own New York City. A Lenna Endowed Visiting Professor at SBU in 2009, Barry has been on two reporting teams that have won Pulitzer Prizes. Dan Barry, a New York Times columnist and distinguished alumnus of St. Bonaventure University, will be on campus from Feb. 9-20 as the Lenna Endowed Visiting Professor. Barry will be speaking at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Dresser Auditorium located in the John J. Murphy Professional Building. During his visit, Barry will give various classroom and campus lectures and an open address at Jamestown Community College, in that city, the morning of Wednesday, Feb 18. Barry graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and mass communication and was named the 1994 Alumnus of the Year. He is the author of “This Land,” a well-read weekly feature column that appears every Monday on the first page of the Times national section and takes him to every corner of the United States.
