Allegheny County buck ranks as No. 13 in archery category The hunters who top Pennsylvania’s all-time list for largest bucks harvested will remain there a while longer. The Pennsylvania Game Commission today took official measurements on an exceptionally large rack from a whitetail buck taken in Allegheny County two months ago, during the statewide archery season. Many believed the buck held the potential to be a new state record, but the final score fell short of the leaders. The typical 10-point buck taken with a crossbow Oct. 10 by Fayette County hunter Jeff Lenzi netted a score of 166 inches, based on Boone & Crockett Club standards for scoring big-game animals. The score places the buck at No. 13 in the typical archery category in the Pennsylvania Big Game Records book. The top buck in that category, taken in Allegheny County in 2004 by Michael Nicola Sr., of Waterford, scores 178 2/8 inches. A deer hit a passenger on a motorcycle this morning, causing injuries to both her and the driver. Sheriff’s deputies say 62-year-old Robert Stickner of Cranesville was on West Mina Road in French Creek at 8:40 this morning when the deer jumped across the road, hitting the motorcycle and 47-year-old Suzanne Dingle, also of Cranesville. The collision caused the bike to go off the road and flip over. Stickner and Dingle were both taken to Corry Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Five deer were dumped into Four Mile Creek, Wintergreen Gorge, near Erie and the state game commission is trying to figure out who did it. Wildlife Conservation Officer Larry Smith says the deer believed to be road kills because they had multiple broken bones were found just upstream of Cooper Road. He believes the deer were dumped upstream and high water carried them downstream. The deer have been removed from the stream to a dry area to allow scavengers to help in the decomposition process. No one was hurt but a car had to be towed after a deer ran out in front of it Monday night. Police say at about 9:15 p.m. 48-year-old Samir Abdulfetah of Scarborough, Ontario, was on Route 219 in Lafayette Township when the deer ran onto the road, and was hit by the front of the car on the passenger’s side. Abdulfetah pulled the car to the side of the road, where he called police. He had four passengers, ranging in age from 18 to 47. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Chronic Wasting Disease has been found in at least one deer on a farm about five miles west of DuBois. The state Department of Agriculture says a 5-year-old deer that died on the Reynoldsville farm tested positive for CWD, and now the farm is under quarantine. Deer legally may not be moved on or off the property, and the ongoing investigation may lead to additional farms being quarantined. HARRISBURG – The House Game and Fisheries Committee, chaired by Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint), heard testimony Wednesday about deer management and a half dozen pieces of legislation related to deer management and hunting policies in the Commonwealth. “As legislators, we hear from our hunters quite often about how they aren’t seeing many – or any deer – in areas they have hunted for generations,” Causer said. “They are understandably frustrated, and have been for a very long time. They deserve answers and solutions. “We held this hearing today to gather information about a half dozen proposals that have been put forth by lawmakers to address some of the concerns raised by our sportsman community,” he added. The hearing featured testimony from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs. A Bradford man wasn’t hurt after his SUV hit a deer on Route 46 in Cameron County. Police say 47-year-old Greg Burkhouse was traveling north on 46 when the deer entered the road. The SUV was disabled. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947
