Harrisburg – Lorrie Rauch of New Tripoli, Lehigh County, won first place with her Peachy Apple Pie in the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest on Saturday at the 2013 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. It’s all in the apples,” said Rauch. “If you have a good apple, you have a good pie.” Her choice was Cortland apples from a local farmer’s market. Rauch, who loves baking and competing, won the contest in 2009 and has baked a different type of pie each year she competed in the contest. Five judges tasted each of the 73 pies entered to determine the winner based on overall appearance, filling, flavor, creativity and crust. The judges were: McKean County Fair President John Berne, Don Keneske, Reed Soergel, Fay Strickler and Charlie Gipe. The 2012 Pennsylvania Fair Queen Drew An Brubaker presented the awards. One hundred years ago in 1912, the first 4-H clubs were started in Pennsylvania. It only took a few years for Penn State Extension, the parent organization of the state 4-H program, to reach McKean County. 4-H is the only non-formal youth organization based at land grant universities and often the first experience many young people have with higher education. 4-H helps young people develop knowledge and skills to become capable, caring and contributing citizens through a wide variety of hands-on learning projects such as gardening, sewing, pet care, rocketry, robotics, insects, careers, wildlife, livestock, horses, dairy, cooking, GIS, babysitting and more. Cary R. Kaber, 76, of 624 Seaward Ave., passed away, Thursday, December 1st, 2011 at the Bradford Regional Medical Center. Born September 30, 1935, in Bradford he was a son of the late David C. and Helen (Allen) Kaber. On June 16, 1962 in Bradford he married Patricia Kaber who survives. Mr. Kaber was a 1956 graduate of Bradford High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. He had worked at Litton Business Machines, then owned and operated Kaber Electric. In 1994 he was employed by Foster Township Highway Department until his retirement in 1997. He was elected to the Foster Township Board of Supervisors in 1988 and served his birthplace for 12 years. During his tenure as Supervisor he was instrumental in the development of the Wal*Mart shopping plaza, the construction of the Tuna Crossroads bridge and the clean up of the tire/junkyard on Tuna Crossroads. The Grand Parade at the McKean County Fair has been cancelled due to weather, but the queen coronation will be held on the mini stage.

Miss Smethport Kayla Woods was crowned McKean County Fair Queen Monday night at the 105th fair. Kayla is the daughter of Kim and Dan Woods of Smethport. Emily Frederick of Bradford was the first runner-up. Six students from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s sister college in Japan arrived in Bradford on Wednesday for a two-week stay in the United States. The students from Yokohama College of Commerce arrived with their instructor, Dr. Akiko Sakai, and will hone their English as part of Pitt-Bradford’s Summer Intensive English Program. Students will live on campus and visit local attractions such as Chautauqua (N.Y.) Lake, the Zippo/Case Museum, Festa Italiana, the Seneca Iroquois National Museum in Salamanca, N.Y., Crook Farm and the McKean County Fair. On Sunday, the students will visit Niagara Falls, and next week they will attend the Potter County Bowhunter Festival at Ski Denton. Members of the community will host the students in their homes for dinners, barbecues and game nights. Before returning to Japan, the students will visit New York City, where they will see the off-Broadway show STOMP and explore the city. ...

By Sandra Rhodes Visitor & Member Services Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau With the end of summer in sight, there’s one staple yet to come – fairs – and McKean County, located just 90 miles south of Buffalo, N.Y., has its fair share of events this month. The McKean County Fair, held annually in East Smethport nearby to scenic Pennsylvania Route 6, has festivities, rides, animals and food for the entire family, with the week-long events beginning on Sunday, Aug. 15, and ending Saturday, Aug. 21. The fair, in its 105th year, has many of the staples of an old-time fair as well as some new and exciting shows. The action begins at the fairgrounds, located on Route 46, with an antique tractor pull Sunday at 11 a.m. Starting at 1 p.m., there will be a tractor/farm equipment show and parade. Throughout the week, there will be livestock judging. Among the highlights of the event are amusement rides that begin at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16. Terry Lee Goffee will take the stage at 8 p.m...

Kane, Pennsylvania, will be high on the “Hog” – as well as other motorcycles - this weekend with the Allegheny Motorcycle Show & Dice Run. The two-day, two-part event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, and Sunday, Aug. 8, at Evergreen Park. The dice run will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, with registration from 9 to 11 a.m. After registration closes at 11 a.m., dice run participants will then proceed through one of the most beautiful spots on earth – the Allegheny National Forest. A beer garden, bands and vendors – selling merchandise as well as food - will be on hand from 3 to 8 p.m. Make sure to stick around for Sunday with the motorcycle show at Evergreen Park. Despite the nasty weather, the McKean County Fair will be open tonight. However, the tractor and truck pulled has been cancelled.

Miss Bradford, Tate Slaven, is the 2009 McKean County Fair Queen. Slaven received the honor during Monday night’s celebration at the fair. Tate is the daughter of Tina and Tim Slaven of Bradford. Slaven will represent McKean County in January at the Pennsylvania State Association of Fairs.
