JAMESTOWN – September 29, 2014 - The Robert H. Jackson is pleased to announce that a dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2014 to officially name the Robert H. Jackson Field at the Greater Chautauqua-Jamestown Airport. The airport’s terminal was previously dedicated in Jackson’s honor in 1973 and on Saturday all of the airport’s runways and surrounding grounds will be named in his honor. This event is free and open to the public. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at the airport’s Robert H. Jackson Terminal, 3163 Airport Drive in Jamestown, with the landing of a military C-47 (DC3) aircraft, and special appearance by “Robert H. Jackson.” Property of the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, NY, the C-47 aircraft was recently in Normandy to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. It was standing room only in the atrium of the new Robert H. Jackson United States Courthouse in downtown Buffalo on Monday as more than 200 guests, including representatives of the federal and local governments, courts, legal community, Robert H. Jackson Center leadership and Jackson family and friends, gathered for the formal unveiling of its official name honoring the Supreme Court Justice and U.S. Chief Prosecutor at Nuremberg. The Honorable William M. Skretny, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Western District of New York, presided at the ceremony, as The Honorable Richard J. Arcara welcomed the attendees. Due to a growing workload in the Western District, Skretny and Arcara began making the case for a new federal courthouse in Buffalo well over 10 years before the approval for funding the structure passed congress in 2007. JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The Robert H. Jackson Center will host Karen Korematsu, Executive Director of the Korematsu Institute for Civil Rights and Education, for “A Conversation with Karen Korematsu” on October 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the general public. Ms. Korematsu is the daughter of Fred Korematsu, one of four men who defied Executive Order 9066, which established the American concentration camps, and ordered that Japanese Americans be forcibly removed from their homes and incarcerated during World War II. His 1944 landmark case before the United States Supreme Court challenged the constitutionality of the mass incarceration, but the Court upheld his conviction for violating the exclusion order in a 6-3 ruling. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson disagreed strongly with the court, and although in the minority at the time, his dissenting opinion continues to be read today in law schools as a major definition of the rights of the individual versus the powe...
