Leandra’s Law charges have been filed against a Portville man accused of driving under the influence with his 1-year-old and 5-year-old children in the vehicle when he crashed the vehicle. Police say 25-year-old Shane Rice crashed the vehicle early Tuesday morning in Seneca Avenue in Olean. Rice and the children were taken to Olean General Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Besides aggravated DWI, Rice was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and driving without a license. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Fire destroyed an Olean home Sunday morning. Firefighters say when they got to 314 Wayne Street at around 5:30 a.m. the house was engulfed by flames. No one was home and no injuries were reported. A man who admitted to distributing indecent material to minors in two counties last year will spend the next year-and-a-half to three years in a New York state prison. 24-year-old Shawn Washington gave the material to a minor in Olean on August 23, according to previous WESB reports. The Cattaraugus County sentence will run at the same as the sentenced he’s currently serving for handing out materials in September in Belmont. In December in Allegany County Court he was sentenced to 2 ½ to 7 years for that. Washington was on probation for a string of burglaries in Allegany County in 2012 when he committed the other crimes. Four people, including an Olean man, have been arrested by the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office for trafficking a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of marijuana. The AG’s office says 33-year-old Andrew Kubiak of Olean, 31-year-old John Nelson and Meadville, 39-year-old Jessica Clark of Erie and 29-year-old Nicole Nelson of Santa Rosa California, conspired to buy bulk quantities of marijuana and take it to Meadville. According to the grand jury’s presentment, Nicole Nelson bought a car in Erie that she and Clark drove to Santa Rosa, where it was packed with 85 pounds of marijuana. Kubiak met the women in Sacramento. He and Clark were going to deliver the marijuana to Nelson’s brother, John, but they were picked up by police in Kansas. John Nelson is in Crawford County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Kubiak and Clark were released on $25,000 unsecured bond. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Nicole Nelson. Four people appeared in Cattaraugus County Court on burglary charges in separate cases. 25-year-old Caitlyn Sarber of Allegany attempted to break into a Town of Allegany building on September 27. 42-year-old Jonathan Perrington of Olean attempted to break into an Olean building on October 6. 24-year-old Jay Miller of Olean attempted to break into an Olean building on September 16, 22-year-old Ally Wanatee broke into a Town of Salamanca house on May 4, 2014, and did $1,500 worth of damage. A Duke Center man has pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors say on December 12 38-year-old Walter Randall changed his address and did not notify the state sex offender registry within 10 days. Back in 1995, in Olean, he sexually abused a 12-year-old girl. He is scheduled for sentencing on April 13. ~~~ A Bradford woman has pleaded guilty to a theft charge. 19-year-old Karlie Ryan stole property in Olean on September 13. She is scheduled for sentencing on May 11. ~~~ A 53-year-old man has pleaded guilty to trying to have sexual contact with a child. Prosecutors say Larry Tadder of Olean tried to have inappropriate contact with a child younger than 11 on November 1 in Olean. He’s scheduled for sentencing on April 13. A 29-year-old repeat felon will spend six years in prison for selling heroin. Franklin Chase of Olean sold the drug in Olean last march. He was sentenced Monday in Cattaraugus County Court. St. Bonaventure University will save an estimated $100,000 or more a year on its electric bill thanks to a new solar electric project being developed in Olean. BQ Energy of Poughkeepsie, a leader in developing renewable energy on brownfields and landfills, will construct a pair of 2.7-megawatt solar arrays on a 24-acre portion (Parcel 3) of the Olean Gateway Site off Buffalo Road near Interstate 86. The longtime industrial site has been undergoing a massive cleanup over the past several years to make the land usable again for development. The project, called Solean, is among eight projects in Western New York and 141 in the state receiving support through Gov. The man who says he robbed the Dan Horn Pharmacy in Olean Tuesday is behind bars. Police 27-year-old Shawn Deahn of Olean confessed to the crime. He was sent to jail on $5,000 bail. Deahn did not show a weapon during the robbery, but gave the clerk a note demanding Suboxone pills. After getting four pills, he ran away, but turned himself in on Thursday. Olean Police have release a surveillance camera image of the man who robbed the Dan Horn Pharmacy Tuesday morning. The white man is 18 to 28 years old. He walked into the Greene Street store at just after 9 a.m. and handed the clerk a note demanding Suboxone. After the clerk gave him the drug, he left the store on foot headed toward the intersection of East Greene and South Barry streets. He did not display a weapon. Police in Olean are searching for a man who robbed a pharmacy this morning. Dan Horn Pharmacy and Health Services on East Greene Street was robbed at 9:10 a.m. Police say the robber did not display a weapon. The suspect is white, about 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red checkered coat with a red scarf covering his face. CORRECTION: The DA's office has sent a correction concerning Sherlock's sentence. He will actually spend two years in jail. He was sentenced to one year for attempted assault and one year for criminal contempt. The sentences will run consecutively. The man originally charged with attempted murder for throwing gasoline in the faces of two people in an attempt to set them on fire has been sentenced to a year in Cattaraugus County Jail. 42-year-old Chris Sherlock of Olean threw the gasoline at the people in the early morning hours of September 5, 2013. Two men have pleaded not guilty to shooting an Olean man and dumping his body off the Route 16 overlook. 28-year-old Gary Maull and 53-year-old Thomas Turtle Hall are charged with first degree murder in connection to the death of Otis Lamont Parks, who body was found August 8 on an embankment at the overlook. Parks, who was also known as Lamont Clemens, was executed, according to Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb. Maull and Hall are jailed without bail. A Bradford woman is facing a drug charge in Cattaraugus County after a raid of an Olean house over the weekend. Police say they found heroin, marijuana and drug paraphernalia at the home of 30-year-old Timothy Lunn. He’s charged criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument and related offenses. 24-year-old Caitlyn Stein of High Street is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. St. Bonaventure University’s sophomore class threw a hair-razing party unlike any other college in Western New York. The Goin’ Bald for Bucks event Oct. 18 raised nearly $10,000 for cancer research and support —almost twice as much as any college in the region has ever raised. “It was just amazing to see the students’ passion for the event,” said Leah Shearer Noonan, SBU class of 2000 and program coordinator with the Teens Living with Cancer program, one of the three organizations to benefit from the fundraiser. Buffalo’s Roswell Park and Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Institute were the other beneficiaries. A Tim Hortons employee is accused of stealing from the cash register. Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s deputies say 27-year-old Shawn Deahn of Olean took the money November 3 from the restaurant on Route 417. Two Cattaraugus County women have pleaded guilty to using stolen credit cards in separate cases. Kimberly Levergood of Machias used a credit card that did not belong to her and stole more than $1,000 worth of property back in May. She is scheduled for sentencing on February 2. Two men have pleaded not guilty to running a meth lab in Olean. The Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force says 44-year-old Richard Wall Olean and 37-year-old Carey Peden of Harrsiburg, Arkansas, were operating the lab in a house on Riverside Drive, which the task force raided back in September. They are each charged with manufacturing meth. Peden is also charged with possession of a hypodermic instrument, resisting arrest and false personation.
