Joan Rivers Dies at Age 81
Comedian Joan Rivers has died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, according to her daughter, Melissa Rivers. She was 81. "It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," Melissa Rivers said in a prepared statement. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends." Watch Lester Holt's report here .

Rapp: Gas-Tax-Propelled Transportation Plan
Too Much for Rural PA Residents to Bear
HARRISBURG (News Release) — After casting her fourth "no" vote in less than a week, Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren/Forest/McKean) issued the following statement regarding Thursday evening’s final passage of a transportation funding plan that contains a $2.3 billion increase in gas taxes and fees on Pennsylvania drivers: “There is no excuse to impose an additional $2.3 billion gas tax and fee increase on Pennsylvania motorists when we already spend close to $7 billion annually on transportation. My constituents view this transportation plan which is now awaiting the governor’s signature as more money they are going to have pay to fuel and maintain their vehicles to subsidize mass transit for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. “Any additional revenue that comes out of this transportation funding plan comes at the full expense and burden of Pennsylvania motorists. Two men were hurt after one fell from the upper deck of Ralph Wilson Stadium and fell onto a group of people below. The man in the upper deck was sliding on a railing at the edge of the 300 Level of the stadium when he fell off, and onto a group of people in the 200 Level. The Bills organization says the man who fell, and another man, were taken to a hospital for observation. The incident happened during the second quarter of the Bills/Jets game, which the Bills won. Should It Be Displayed in Schools?
Dozens of grassroots organizers and concerned citizens joined in a rally in the state Capitol today to urge passage of legislation calling for the public display of the official national motto “In God We Trust.” Rep. Kathy Rapp said the legislation calling for the public posting of the motto in school buildings throughout the Commonwealth serves as an educational aid to remind students about the underlying values held by the nation’s founders. “In God We Trust” was officially adopted as the national motto in 1956, and appeared on US currency as early as 1864. Zippo Lighter Saves Olympic Relay

On Sunday, shortly after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin kicked off the four-month-long torch relay for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, the flame, which had traveled to Moscow all the way from Athens, Greece, was extinguished in a wind gust outside the Kremlin. As the torchbearer, a former champion swimmer Shavarsh Karapetyan, noticed his torch’s lack of luminance, he hustled over to nearby onlooker, possibly part of the security detail, who deftly got things back on schedule with a quick flick of his Zippo lighter. GT to Congress: Withhold My Pay
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, today announced that he will not accept a salary for the duration of the Federal government shutdown. In a letter to the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives, Thompson formally requested that his pay be withheld during the lapse of appropriations. “Pursuant to the 27th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, pay for a Member of Congress cannot be altered until a new Congress begins,” Thompson wrote. “However, it is clear that Congress has failed to fulfill one of its most basic responsibilities; making appropriations.” “I respectfully request that you withhold my pay for the duration of the government shutdown,” the letter concludes. Feasibility Study Between St. Bonaventure University, Hilbert College
St. Bonaventure University and Hilbert College, Franciscan institutions in New York, will explore options to build on their 20-year partnership and to enhance student access, opportunities and experience. The Boards of Trustees of both institutions have approved a feasibility study to determine if the two institutions should expand their unique collaboration in academic programs, facilities and operational practices. The two campuses are about 60 miles apart in Western New York. St. Bonaventure has offered graduate programs on the campus of Hilbert College in a weekend format for the past two decades. The Boards authorized the study that could lead to a strategic plan for “some form of further strategic alliance” between the two institutions. “While the feasibility analysis is a ‘discovery process,’ we wouldn’t be investing in this effort if we didn’t think there were likely some ways in which St. Bonaventure and Hilbert College could collaborate more closely and achieve gr...

Flames Rage on Jersey Shore Boardwalk
Flames are spreading rapidly along the boardwalk in Seaside Park at the Jersey Shore after a fire started at Kohr's Ice Cream shop. The fire, which started around 2:30 p.m., appears to be getting larger, as video from Skyforce10 shows dark, thick smoke and flames rising from several block along the boardwalk. Officials Tour Flooded Areas
Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) and Speaker of the House Sam Smith (R-Jefferson, Indiana, Armstrong) joined Governor Tom Corbett in DuBois City and Jefferson and Clearfield Counties today to meet with local officials and emergency management personnel to assess local flood damage. During a tour of the region, Senator Scarnati, Representative Smith and Governor Corbett were accompanied by Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) Director, Glenn Cannon, and Adjutant General, Wesley Craig. The group was able to view and evaluate areas affected by the severe thunderstorms and flooding which began impacting the region on Thursday.
