George F. Schaming, 85, of 26 Constitution Ave. Bradford, passed away, Saturday, March 31st, 2012 at the Hamot Medical Center in Erie. Born August 20, 1926 in Lewis Run, he was a son of the late Walter B. and Susan M. (Bauer) Schaming Sr. He was a 1944 graduate of St. Bernard High School. On May 17, 1944 he enlisted in the United States Navy served two years during WWII and was discharged July 12, 1944. On October 18, 1947 in Limestone, he married Mary Lou Fox Schaming who died October 2, 1995. On December 27, 1996 in Niagara Falls NY, he married Joyce (Piersimoni- Smith) Schaming who survives. After the service he worked as a cabinet maker in Rochester NY, later as a Sales Manager at the Boylston Chevrolet Dealership in Bradford. He became District Sales Manager for Chrysler in Pittsburgh. Bradford City Firefighters & Bradford Township firefighters are currently on the scene of a fire at Bisett Building Center/DeFrank's Applicances near the back of the area Williams Street that's across from Edna Avenue. Bradford City Council on Tuesday renewed a lease with Allegany Concrete to rent a portion of land at the Holley Avenue Department of Public Works complex, but not without hearing objections from Mayor Tom Riel first. Riel said he meant no disrespect to Allegany Concrete or the rest of council but he was not in favor of renewing the lease. “I’m not against free enterprise or competition but” when the original lease was approved five years ago council was under the belief that they would go in to provide concrete only for the highway and they would not be competing against other companies in the area, “and that did not hold to be true,” he said. “There’s no place (else) they could set up that concrete place anyplace in this valley, especially that close to an interchange, for $1,000 a month and operate a concrete plant,” Riel said. “I do think that it makes it an unlevel playing field. The juveniles who committed crimes at Allegheny Arsenal, Bisett Building Center and Harris Oil have confessed to the crimes. Bradford City Police Chief Chris Lucco says after interviewing several suspects and receiving multiple tips, they were able to identify the suspects on surveillance video, and subsequently obtain confessions. Their names are not being released because of their ages. The crimes happened over the weekend. Early Sunday morning, officers responded to an alarm at Allegheny Arsenal on Main Street and found evidence that someone had broken into the store. The owner reported that nothing was missing. Later Sunday morning, officers responded to a report of a vehicle stolen from Harris Oil on Williams Street, and learned that a pickup truck and a 4-wheel ATV had been taken overnight. The Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce announces its 3rd annual Summer Soiree to be held July 21st from 5-7:30pm at Heritage Suites, 139 Minard Run Road. “Coping with Schizophrenia” will be the topic at Bradford Regional Medical Center’s (BRMC’s) fifth annual Rays of Hope Mental Health Gala scheduled for Thursday, May 27, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the main lobby. The guest speaker will be Frederick J. Frese, Ph.D., a psychologist who served for 15 years as the director of psychology at Western Reserve Psychiatric Hospital, one of Ohio’s largest psychiatric hospitals. He is currently coordinator of the Ohio’s Summit County Recovery Project. “This event will bring a wealth of information about mental illness to anyone in the community who wants and needs to learn more. Our ultimate hope is to eliminate the stigma of mental illness,” said Jacqueline Shine-Dixon, director of BRMC’s Bradford Recovery Systems, which is the hospital’s psychiatry department.
