The City of Bradford and University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Police departments were among those presented with awards by the AAA today. Both departments received Bronze Community Traffic Safety Awards. The St. Marys Police Department, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department and Jamestown barracks of the New York State Police received platinum awards. The Warren and Youngsville police departments received gold awards and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office received a silver award. “We are proud of all these departments for their achievement and participation in the Community Traffic Safety Program,” said Terri Rae Anthony, AAA East Central Safety Advisor. “They went above and beyond the call of duty by organizing projects to make their communities safer places for motorists and residents.” To be eligible for the annual awards, a community must conduct traffic safety promotions and educate the public on safety topics. As Halloween approaches, AAA East Central reminds parents, trick-or-treaters and motorists to observe some important safety tips when they are out in the evening during the next several days. “Because excited trick-or-treaters often forget about safety, motorists and parents must be even more alert,” said Terri Rae Anthony, safety advisor, AAA East Central. “Drivers should to be especially vigilant between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight, when pedestrians are most vulnerable,” she added. A snowy forecast indicates that the first snow of the season will coincide with the first official day of winter. AAA recommends motorists brush up on winter driving techniques before the weather outside turns frightful. Nearly one-quarter of weather related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy or icy pavement, resulting in more than 1,300 deaths and 116,800 people injured annually, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration. Drive Distraction Free “It is especially important when driving in winter conditions to drive distraction-free,” according to J.J. Miller, AAA Safety Advisor. The average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline in Western PA is $3.333. This current price is a half penny more than the previous week. According to AAA’s Fuel Gauge, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil finished down at $97.77 at the close of formal trading on the NYMEX Monday. The drop was attributed to the ongoing dismal outlook for the global economy, particularly in the euro zone where sovereign debt concerns remain front of mind. This sentiment resulted in global equities markets turning lower, while the U.S. dollar strengthened relative to foreign currencies. The same factors that have impacted crude prices for the last several months continued to exert pressure on prices last week, as global economic malaise and demand destruction remained the primary focus of traders. Four area Police Departments received Platinum Awards from AAA for their community traffic safety efforts, according to officials at AAA East Central. Five local departments earned Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. The Platinum awards were given to “Commendable Leaders” for their safety efforts and enforcement activities geared towards making communities safer. AAA projects approximately 1.18 million Pennsylvanians will travel at least 50 miles from home for their turkey and pumpkin pie this year; an 11.4 percent increase over 2009 when 1.06 million traveled. The automobile is the preferred method of transportation as 1.11 million plan to drive to their destination. Approximately 54,000 are expected to fly (up 3.5 percent) and 16,500 will travel by an alternative method of travel. “Many Americans are in a better financial position than they were last year, although high unemployment and lingering economic uncertainly are still lingering concerns,” said Jim Lehman, executive vice president, AAA East Central. “Thanksgiving has always been a special time for families to visit their friends and loved ones.
