Gerrit Cole struck out 10 batters in 8 1/3 innings to lead the Pirates to a 4-1 win over the Mets Friday night. He gave up only six hits – all singles – and lowered his ERA to 2.05. Chris Stewart had two hits and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Jung Ho Kang, Pedro Alvarez and Gregory Polanco also drove in runs as the Pirates dropped New York to 7-13 on the road. Prince Fielder smacked two homers, drove in four runs and helped the Texas Rangershold off the New York Yankees 10-9 Friday night for their third straight win. The Yankees have lost four in a row and eight of nine. Brandon Moss homered and drove in three runs, while Carlos Carrasco allowed two runs in six innings to help the Indians earn a 7-3 win over Cincinnati. It was Cleveland’s fourth win in a row and sixth in eight games. Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1. The Phillies have lost three of four after winning six in a row. Mo’Ne Davis needed only 70 pitches to shut out Tennessee in the opening round of the Little League World Series – and get herself into the record books in the process. The 13-year-old became the first girl to pitch a winning game in series. She allowed two hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone in the six-inning complete game victory. Her phenomenal play is getting some attention from big leaguers – including the Pirates’ Andrew McCutcheon who tweeted to her that he was pulling for her and her teammates on the Taney Dragons from the Philadelphia area. For some people in Potter County the best part of tonight’s Pirates game will come before the first pitch. Students from Oswayo Valley Elementary School will be singing the National Anthem before the game. As for the game, you can hear that on 1490 WESB at 6:40 p.m., starting with the pre-game show. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) today announced that Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen has been named the 2013 National League Most Valuable Player. McCutchen is the sixth different player in Pirates history to receive the award since it was created in 1931, joining Dick Groat (1960), Roberto Clemente (1966), Dave Parker (1978), Willie Stargell (1979 - tied with Keith Hernandez) and Barry Bonds (1990 and 1992). Hall-of-Famer Paul Waner also received the National League Most Valuable Player Citation in 1927. The 27-year-old McCutchen hit .317 with 38 doubles, five triples, 21 home runs, 84 RBI, 97 runs scored and 27 stolen bases in 157 games in 2013 while leading the Pirates to the postseason for the first time since 1992. McCutchen ended the season ranked seventh in the league in batting, third in hits (185) and on-base percentage (.404), second in multi-hit games (59), sixth in runs scored and slugging percentage (.508) and fifth in total bases (296). “This is a trem...

The Pittsburgh Pirates were invited to the White House Thursday – but not because of the awesome season they’re having so far. The organization was recognized for its “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green” initiative. Pirates Chairman of the Board Bob Nutting participated in a “Sports and Sustainability” forum held by the White House, which focused on the economic and environmental benefits of greening the sports industry. “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green” launched in 2008 and focuses on recycling, conservation and awareness. Last year alone they diverted 78 tons of glass, 18 tons of aluminum cans, 25 tons of plastic, 24 tons of cooking oil and more than 300 tons of other recyclable materials. As we told you last week, students from Oswayo Valley Elementary School sang the National Anthem when the Pirates played thhe Nationals Wednesday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. 66 students from 4th And 5th grade were under the direction of music teacher Mrs. Beth Lewis. The Oswayo Valley School District strives to insure that all students know the words to the Anthem so it is always a large part of the music program. Performing the anthem at a Pirates baseball game emphasizes the importance to the students. It is quite an honor for our students and we are proud of their accomplishments, stated Principal Carolyn Fugate. We believe it will be a a meaningful part of their education and a memorable experience. This is our second appearance at PNC Park. The first time was in 2010. Students were accompanied by teachers, staff and parents on the overnight trip to Pittsburgh which included a tour of Heinz Field and the Pittsburgh Zoo. A seesaw Friday night battle went the way of the Richmond Flying Squirrels who utilized nine runs over their final two offensive innings to turn a nailbiter into a 15-7 rout and even their four-game weekend series with the Curve at a win apiece at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Squirrels entered the eighth trailing 7-6, but sent ten men to the plate in the frame, getting the decisive blow on a two-out, two-run triple off the bat of top prospect Gary Brown. Daniel Mayora, Juan Perez, Eliezer Zambrano, and pitcher Brett Bochy each added an RBI in the six-run inning, as well. The Pittsburgh Pirates have called Bradford's Zach Foster up to the Altoona Curve. Foster had been with the Bradenton Marauders. The right-handed pitcher will be given a number once he joins the team in Altoona, according to the Curve's Director of Communications Mike Passanisi.
