An Oil City man is dead after a large tree fell on the cab of his tractor-trailer Monday afternoon on Route 27 in Pittsfield Township. Police say 57-year-old Lanny Ross was traveling west when the tree fell from the north edge of the road. Warren County Coroner Jeremiah Borden pronounced Ross dead at the scene. Borden says it’s unclear why the tree fell, but he believes recent rain may have softened the ground, causing the tree – including the roots – to fall onto the truck and the road. A new program at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will offer $1,000 scholarships to qualifying high school students currently enrolled in its College in the High School courses. The $1,000 award is in addition to other merit awards that a student may receive and is renewable for up to four years. Qualifying students must have a 2.5 grade point average in the Pitt-Bradford courses they’ve taken through College in the High School in order to qualify. “With college costs rising across the nation, we know that affordability and quality are of prime concern to students and their families,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, president. “At Pitt-Bradford, we’ve partnered with local schools in our College in the High School program to ensure that students across our region have access to the best in higher education.” College in the High School courses through Pitt-Bradford are offered in 18 school districts in north central and northwestern Pennsylva...

A Venango County probation officer is accused of raping and sexually assaulting two women he was supervising. 39-year-old Marc Taylor of Knox in Clarion County allegedly raped the women while they were on house arrest in 2009 and 2010, according to papers filed in District Judge Douglas Dinberg’s office. Charges were filed Tuesday by Oil City Police following an eight-month investigation. Taylor is charged with felony counts of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, institutional sexual assault and bribery, along with misdemeanor counts of obstruction of administration of law and official oppression.
