McKean and neighboring counties will be receiving nearly a million dollars in state grant money to enhance trails, parks and other tourist attractions in the region. The Pennsylvania Route 6 Heritage Corporation will get $140,000 to provide technical assistance to communities in Bradford, Crawford, Erie, Lackawanna, McKean, Pike, Potter, Tioga, Warren, Wayne and Wyoming counties to implement their Heritage Work Plans and coordinate Artisan Trail for 2012. The money will also go toward coordinating the Mile Marker Maintenance program, develop printed materials to market Route 6 and its assets, update the Interpretive Plan and History of Route 6 and develop application for National Scenic Byway and All-American Road designation for Route 6. WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) filed an amendment with Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) to a must-pass bill that would restore Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) status to 16 rural Pennsylvania counties. The special designation helps small businesses in rural Pennsylvania gain access to federal contract opportunities which helps grow their businesses and create jobs in the region. “The unemployment rate may have ticked down slightly, but the economy is still incredibly hard for middle class families in rural Pennsylvania. This program helps our businesses grow and we must fight to keep it in place,” said Senator Casey. “Right now the government needs to be doing everything it can to help our small businesses, not pull the rug out from under them. The North Central Planning and Development Commission has awarded $1,000 to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to be used for science camp scholarships. The gift funds $100 scholarships to the first 10 students who request them. The students must not have already registered for X-treme Science Camp, which will take place from June 13 to 17. The total cost of the full-day camp is $125 for the first child and $110 for each additional child per family. Families may apply for more than one scholarship. X-treme Science Camp is designed for children age 7 to 12 years old. In addition to participating in a variety of labs and science activities, campers will enjoy gym games, swimming and free time. Campers will need to bring a packed lunch, beverage and swimming clothes each day. The camp will provide a morning and afternoon snack.
