New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico is saddened to announce the death of Trooper Christopher G. Skinner. Trooper Skinner was last assigned to the Traffic Incident Management Unit (TIM Detail), Troop C, Delaware County. Around 12:00 p.m. on May 29, 2014, Trooper Skinner was outside his marked State Police car conducting a vehicle and traffic stop on I-81 north of exit 6, between Chenango Bridge and Castle Creek, Broome County, when he was struck by a passing vehicle. Trooper Skinner was killed instantly. The driver continued on a short distance before stopping and running into nearby woods. The operator was taken into custody shortly after 1:00 p.m. following a search. Trooper Skinner was a 13 year veteran of the New York State Police. He worked in Troops C, E and G. He was assigned to the TIM detail in June 2008. Harrisburg – State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan today released the following statement regarding the fatal crash that took the life of a Pennsylvania State Trooper this morning: “It is with a very heavy heart and a deep sense of sadness that I announce the tragic death of Trooper First Class Blake T. Coble of Troop D, Beaver Station.” “While on patrol today just after 10 a.m., Trooper Coble was involved in a motor vehicle crash at SR 168 and Blackhawk Road in South Beaver Township, Beaver County. He was transported to the Heritage Valley Beaver hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Trooper Coble, age 48, had been a member of the Pennsylvania State Police since Nov. 1, 1988. Trooper Coble has two children and his wife, Brenda, is a Police Communications Operator at Troop D, Beaver Station.” “His untimely death left two children without a father and a wife without her husband, plus countless friends and family members grieving. Hundreds of state troopers and other police officers from around the country attended funeral services today for New York State Trooper Jill Mattice who died last week in a crash near Binghamton. Family friend Nick Van Heeren spoke during the services about Mattice's enthusiasm and passion for life. "Super Trooper Jill was a young lady who spent her breath wisely," Van Heeren said. New York Governor David Paterson also spoke at the funeral to offer his condolences and support on behalf of the state. Paterson also ordered flags in the state to be at half-staff today in honor of Mattice. Mattice was the first female New York State Trooper to be killed in the line of duty.

A Marine from Hornell has been killed in Afghanistan. 19-year-old Lance Corporal Zachary Smith died Saturday. Smith was a 2008 graduate of Hornell High School and was deployed to Afghanistan a month ago.

A New York Stae Trooper died Wednesday when her cruiser hit a tractor trailer in Otsego County. Police say 31-year-old Trooper Jill Mattice was pronounced dead at the scene. New York Governor David Paterson released the following statement: "It was with great sadness that I learned today of the death of Trooper Jill E. Mattice, a nearly seven-year veteran of the New York State Police who was killed this afternoon in a vehicular accident in Otsego County. "Trooper Mattice was assigned to the State Police Duty Station in Oneonta and served as a School Resource Officer at Unadilla Valley High School and Franklin Central Schools. Her community was enhanced by her service; her State is humbled by her sacrifice. "Trooper Mattice is the first female member of the New York State Police to be killed in the line of duty. On behalf of all New Yorkers, it is with profound gratitude for her service that I offer my deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues."

Paul G. Richey, 40, of 183 Doerr Road, Sandycreek Township, was killed in the line of duty late Wednesday morning, January 13, 2010. Paul was born August 29, 1969 in Franklin to his loving parents Clinton (Sam) and Nancy Garmong Richey. Paul was married August 6, 1994 to his devoted wife Carrie Cornell who survives. He was the proud father of two beautiful children Conner age 9 and Catherine age 6 who survive. He was actively involved with his children and helped with his son’s Cub Scout Troop and coached his little league team. He considered his wife and children his universe. Paul graduated from Franklin High School in 1988 and from Edinboro University with a BS degree in Criminal Justice/History in 1993. He graduated from the State Police Academy in Hershey on November 10, 1993 and was then assigned to Troop F in Milton. Paul Richey survived by wife, 2 young children Police have released more information about the state trooper shot and killed this morning near Oil City. 40-year-old Trooper Paul G. Richey was a 16-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police and was assigned to the Patrol Unit at Troop E in Franklin. Richey and Trooper Jason Whitman responded to a call at 11:34 this morning regarding a domestic incident on Bredinsburg Road in Cranberry Township. The troopers arrived at the scene at about 11:45 a.m. After getting out of their vehicles, Richey was hit with a shot fired from the house. Additional troopers responded and Richey was removed from the scene. A state police Special Emergency Response Team is on the scene and the incident remains open. "Trooper Richey sacrificecd his life rather than swerve from the path of duty," State Police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski said in a news release. "We will not forget his service or his sacrifice."
