Lawyer Tries Again to Have Trial Moved

Image
After three weeks of jury selection in the Anthony Taglianetti murder trial only six people have been chosen, and Taglianetti’s lawyer says the trial should be moved to another county. Just two weeks ago a state appellate judge rejected a motion to have the trial moved, but now Chautauqua County public defender Ned Barone has filed a motion with the appellate division of the State Supreme Court. A date to hear the motion hasn’t been set yet. Taglianetti is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Clymer School Superintendent Keith Reed Jr. in September of last year. Prosecutors say Taglianetti killed Reed because he believed Reed was in a relationship with his estranged wife. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Corbetts Visit Elk County

Image
Governor Tom Corbett visited the Elk Country Visitor Center in Elk County last night to highlight the Pennsylvania Wilds as a top destination for travelers and mark 100 years since elk were reintroduced into the region. “Unique tourist destinations like the Elk Country Visitor Center support Pennsylvania’s tourism industry and help create and sustain local jobs,” Corbett said. “Attendance at the center has grown to 200,000 tourists annually, each spending money and supporting local small businesses.” The Elk Country Visitor Center is nestled on 245-acres owned by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) in Benezette. The non-profit Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA), a Pennsylvania based wildlife conservation organization, operates the center using money raised from the private sector. Elk were hunted to extinction in the late 1800s; in 1913, the Pennsylvania Game Commission began an effort to improve habitat and reintroduce them. Pennsylvania’s elk herd now c...

No one was hurt but both vehicles were disabled. St. Marys Police are asking anyone with information about the maroon car – possibly a Lumina or Monte Carlo – with a broken driver’s side taillight to contact them as soon as possible. Image
Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) issued the following statement regarding his proposal to increase the maximum speed limit on Pennsylvania interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike: "Today I have circulated a co-sponsorship memo for legislation I intend to introduce which would increase the maximum speed limit on Pennsylvania interstate highways and the Pennsylvania Turnpike from 65 to 70 miles per hour. Increasing Pennsylvania’s maximum speed limit on interstate highways and the PA Turnpike will allow for better traffic flow and provide for greater efficiency in the delivery of goods throughout the Commonwealth. Numerous other states have already taken the step to allow for traveling at a maximum speed of 70 MPH or more. Over the last two decades since Pennsylvania’s maximum speed limit was last set, our vehicles have become more technically efficient and safety standards have continued to increase. As we move forward with this m...

Police Use Taser After Domestic

Image
Police had to use a Taser on a Bradford man following a domestic incident last month. Court papers say Dustin Birkelund got into a fight with his girlfriend, punched her in the face, then locked her out of the apartment. When police arrived they kicked in the door of the apartment and, later, kicked in the door of the room Birkelund was in. He had a knife with him and would not comply with orders to get on the ground. Police say he “had an aggressive look on his face” as he told police to leave. They were eventually able to use the Taser on him and take him into custody. He waived his preliminary hearing on charges of simple assault, resisting arrest and harassment. He’s free on unsecured bail. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Speed Display Sign Up on
Route 219 in Elk County

PennDOT recently placed a radar-controlled speed display sign in this area to aid in curbing a common type of aggressive driving. The sign faces southbound traffic and utilizes radar to determine the speeds of oncoming traffic. Vehicle speeds are then posted on the lighted section of the sign. The posted speed limit in this area of Route 219 is 55 miles per hour. The sign was put in place at the request of a legislator. The speed display sign will remain on location for up to three weeks. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania. Other aggressive driving behaviors include running stop signs or red lights, passing illegally and tailgating. Aggressive driving behaviors were listed as a crash cause in more than 52 percent of Elk County crashes in 2012. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since ...

Pennsylvania Game Commission Northwest Region Director Keith Harbaugh announced today that the shutdown of the federal government has necessitated a change in pheasant stocking for the Junior Pheasant season. Pheasants will be distributed to the remaining stocking areas for Mercer County, and these areas are listed on page 25 of the Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest . If the federal government resumes full operation later in the small game season, in-season pheasant stocking will take place in the Golden Run area. “We regret having to make this move, but pheasants are a high-dollar resource and the agency has an obligation to place the birds in areas where we get the bes...
