The Bradford Area School Board held a special meeting at noon today to vote on the measure. The appointment is effective today. By ANNE HOLLIDAY WESB/WBRR News Director The Bradford Area School Board on Monday approved a budget and a comprehensive plan for the high school for the next academic year, but did not take any action regarding the Lady Owls basketball coach. Before the second public comment portion of the monthly meeting superintendent Katy Pude acknowledged the people in the audience who were “looking for an explanation” as to why Ann Nuzzo was not going to be recommended to continue coaching the girls’ basketball team for the 2013-14 season. She said it is a personnel issue that she can’t discuss in public, but she did talk about “what did not lead to this decision.” “The truth is there were several parent complaints during basketball season and these were dealt with individually and at that time,” Pude said. “There has not been a recent outcry by any of these parents asking for the coach’s dismissal.” She apologized to any parents or students who were hurt by those rumors. Tyler Wilber and Anthony Zimbardi, senior varsity basketball players at Bradford Area High School, held a three-on-three co-ed basketball tournament on Sunday to benefit therapeutic recreation activities for children with disabilities. Twelve teams comprised of 48 student players participated in the round robin tournament. The winning team was Dave & the Foxy Ladies. Over $600 has been raised to date and will be donated to CARE for Children. The three-on-three tournament was part of Wilber and Zimbardi's Senior Project. During Monday's Bradford Area School Board meeting, superintendent Sandra Romanowski gave a presentation about the cut in education funding in this year’s state budget. She noted that funding for prisons has increased more than funding for education. "What are (the state's) priorities? Prisons or schools?" she asked. "If you look at many of the most vulnerable children that we have served in our community day in and day out, you will see that if nothing else is done and they don't receive good educations, and they don't receive ... the support systems that they need you will definitely have to increase your costs for prisons because those children -- many of them -- will end up there." As the state budget stands now, the Bradford Area School District would see a decrease of $670 per student. Port Allegany and Kane would see decreases of $850 and $845 per student, respectively, and Oswayo Valley would see a decrease of $717 per student. Also during th...

Bradford High is sponsoring rooters buses for students and the community to Saturday’s playoff games in Clarion. Sign up today and tomorrow at the Athletic Directors office and get a $5 McDonald’s gift card. It’s FREE for students and anyone in the community who wants to go. The Bradford High boys and girls basketball teams will host a playoff doubleheader Friday night. The top-seeded Lady Owls will host 4th seeded Punxsutawney at 6pm on WESB and WESB.com . The Lady Owls swept the Lady Chucks, including last Friday night's win at Punxsy that earned the Bradford girls a perfect 22-0 regular season. The Owls will entertain the #3 seeded Clearfield Bison at 7:30pm, also on 1490 WESB. It will be the first meeting of the season between the Owls and Bison. The Bradford Lady Owls basketball team beat Punxsutawney 53-26 to finish the season at 22-0. Ali Rinfrette had 14 points; Emily Marshall scored 12 points; Kaserra Owens and Alex Vinelli each had 10 points. The first playoff is next Friday. If you're reading this before 11 p.m. -- The Lady Owls will be getting a police escort into town and down Main Street at around 11. Welcome them home!!

Congratulations to the Bradford High Lady Owls, who captured the District 9 title tonight with a 59-53 win over Elk Catholic. The Lady Owls are now 21-0 with one game left to play. They are 9-0 in D-9 play. Kaserra Owens led the Lady Owls with 21 points. Ali Rinfrette added 19 and Haley Vinelli chipped in 11. The last time the Lady Owls won a District 9 championship was in 1996. Before tonight's game current coach Ann Nuzzo honored former coach Margie Holland, who started the girls' basketball program in the 1970s and led the team to several undefeated seasons and championships. The Lady Owls dumped Brookville Friday night 59-30 at the Lady Owls Nest. The girls are now 20-0 overall and have captured a least a share of the D-9 League championship. Kaserra Owens led the team with 18 points. Ali Rinfrette scored 14. Alex Vinelli and Haley Vinelli each had 10. The Lady Owls host Elk Catholic Tuesday.
