John Williams Pastry Shop and Gabriel’s Bistro were burglarized this morning, and the Falconer, New York, man who admitted to committing the crimes is in McKean County Jail. City Police say they got a call at 4:19 a.m. saying someone wearing a black mask and dark hoodie was inside John Williams. When police got there, they noticed signs of forced entry, and soon saw a man walking a dolly cart and stopped him. After 41-year-old Richard Schultz told police he had a hammer on him, one officer patted him down looking for more weapons and found a bundle of cash in his pocket. Then they saw the business’s safe outside the back of the building, the cash drawer on the ground and damage to doors. Court papers say that while being interviewed by police Schultz confessed to the John Williams burglary, and also admitted to breaking into Gabriel’s Bistro, where he grabbed the dolly cart he used at John Williams. His bail is set at $25,000, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 12...

As part of their Eagle Scout project, two young men from Bradford have cleared a trail through the area that was formerly the Zippo Ski Slope, near Callahan Park. Quentin and Kyle Frombach, who currently hold the Life Scout rank with the Boy Scouts of America, spent more than 2 years removing brush, grading the trail, and relocating the path to create a loop, which made it more accessible for novice hikers. They also crafted and installed benches along the trail as resting points. “It was a lot of work, but definitely a worthwhile project because now people can more easily enjoy the trail again,” said Quentin, who will graduate from Bradford Area High School this June. The Zippo Ski Slope Trail is 3,578 feet long and accessible from the Callahan Park parking lot. An informational trailhead marker has been installed that was designed by Quentin with help from the Zippo Creative Services and Marketing teams. The Downtown Bradford Business District Authority held its first Lunch in the Square for this season today. The next “Lunch in the Square” event will be held on Wednesday, July 13 at Veterans’ Square, Downtown Bradford from 11:30 until 1:00 pm. Entertainment will be provided by local favorites “Take 3”. Participating restaurants include Chu Lee Gardens, Dari Hut, John Williams European Pastry Shop, The New Broaster, Dairy Queen, Tortugas Restaurant and The Grocery Stretcher. The ‘Lunch in the Square’ program is sponsored by The Downtown Bradford Business District Authority, Bradford Rotary and Zippo Manufacturing.

The first “Lunch in the Square” of the season will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at Veterans’ Square from 11:30 until 1:00 pm. By ANNE HOLLIDAY WESB/WBRR News Director Some changes are coming to downtown Bradford, as several business owners make improvements to existing buildings. Dianne Thompson, pending owner of the former Nusbaum Grocery building on East Washington Street, will be making a number of changes. Bradford City Council on Tuesday agreed to issue the building inspector permission to issue a building permit to Thompson for installation of new windows, siding and reconstruction of the entryway of the building, making an arched entry. The interior of the building will be totally renovated, adding living space on the first floor, and upgrades to the electrical, pluming and heating systems. The main event, though, is always the leek cuisine. Always a popular stop -- the East Bradford fire station for the leek dip contest. Sausage and leek sandwiches were one of the hot items for lunch. Joe Frombach serves up some delicacies, not all with leeks, from John Williams European Pastry Shop. What would Stinkfest be without outhouses? Denny Colman and pals move a couple of outhouses to the starting line for the outhouse races. And, of course ...
