The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will host the 31st annual Law Enforcement Awareness and Familiarization Day on Wednesday, Sept. 18, giving people an opportunity to talk with law enforcement officers and learn more about what they do. The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Frame-Westerberg Commons and is free and open to the public. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and North Central Highway Safety Network will be in attendance with a driving simulator. Employee Band Staff Infection to Perform The Hero's Anne Holliday Broadcasting Live The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Founders’ Day celebration Sept. 3, 50 years from the day it first opened its doors. In the 50 years since that momentous first day of class, Pitt-Bradford has grown from a fledging institution comprised of a hodgepodge of buildings in Bradford to a nationally recognized university with a campus of its very own. Its enrollment has grown by more than 455 percent from 288 students on its first day to about 1,600 students this year, and it has produced more than 10,000 graduates from all 50 states and several countries. “Pitt-Bradford would not have been established had it not been for several forward-thinking individuals in the community who recognized the need for an institution of higher education in this region and for those residents who contributed to the cause,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, Pitt-Bradfor...

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will host a Veterans Day Recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel for all members of the campus and Bradford communities. The event is being co-sponsored by the Office of Community Engagement, Gold Bar Club and the Student Activities Council. The program will feature various patriotic musical selections, prayer and a moment of silence. Dan Robinson, a broadcast communications major from Gifford, will sing the national anthem. Staff Infection, which includes Pitt-Bradford staff members, will perform acoustic versions of “Freedom” by Paul McCartney and “Fortunate Son” by Credence Clearwater Revival. Members of the Bradford community will also perform. Sisters in Spirit members, Christy Danias, Deanna Peters and Claudia Quinn, will sing “American Anthem,” accompanied by Jeanne Gross. Dan Songer, director of campus police and safety, has been chosen by the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Staff Association for its 2012 Staff Association Award. Tonya Ackley, coordinator of community engagement, and Margot Myers, manager of TRiO Student Support Services, nominated Songer. “Chief Songer goes out of his way to ensure the campus’s safety and well-being,” Myers wrote in her nomination. “He leads, by example, a team that provides protection, safety, and overall well-being to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in a respectful, effective and amazing manner.” Ackley, who until recently worked in the university’s residence life office, wrote, “Dan has an open-door policy with all the students and works really well with the resident advisors. Three area police departments received Bronze Awards from AAA for their community traffic safety efforts in a recent award ceremony. Bronze awards were given to , Bradford City, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and the City of Saint Marys police departments. "We are very proud of the departments for their achievement and participation in the Community Traffic Safety Program," said Terri Rae Anthony, AAA safety adviser. "They went above and beyond the call of duty by organizing projects which would make their community a safer place for motorists as well as local residents." The awards were given by AAA East Central for a department's safety efforts and enforcement activities geared toward making communities safer. The departments were among hundreds nationwide that participated in the Community Traffic Safety Program. Campus Police Officer Pierre Gregg has left the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford after 20 years of service due to health reasons. “I can’t express enough how sorry I am to see Pierre leave the department,” said Campus Police Chief Dan Songer. “He has been a great asset to me and the Campus Police, and I depended on him a lot. I will miss his loyalty to the department and to me. I want to wish him all the best in the future.” Gregg said, “I enjoyed working with the students and tried to help the people at Pitt-Bradford – the students, the faculty members and the staff members. I was very happy at Pitt-Bradford, and I would have worked longer if my health had not been the problem.” Gregg and his wife, Jacqueline, have lived in Marshburg since 1973. They have two grown sons, Brian and Bradley. Jacqueline Gregg, Brian Gregg and Brian’s wife, Amy, are University of Pittsburgh graduates. All of them support the University of Pittsburgh system.

McKean County District Attorney Raymond Learn and University of Pittsburgh at Bradford president Dr. Livingston Alexander will speak at the Police Memorial Day service at Pitt-Bradford May 14. The service, which is co-sponsored by the Bucktail Lodge #96 and the William Hanley Sr. Lodge #67 of the Fraternal Order of Police, will take place at 1 p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall. The service is open to the public and will feature a color guard and a 21-gun salute. As part of the service, wreaths will be laid at a plaque commemorating three local officers who have died in the line of duty in the past 23 years – Sgt. David Distrola, Bradford; Patrolman Steven Jerman, Kane; and Patrolman Carl Whippo, Johnsonburg. A luncheon will follow in the KOA Dining Hall in the Frame-Westerberg Commons.
