Waide E. Nolf entered a plea of no contest today in McKean County Court and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. From the DA's office: Nolf pleaded no contest to one count of first degree murder in the death of Tonya Haight, 24, of Bradford and one count of Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of Haight’s three week-old infant daughter. By pleading no contest, Nolf agreed that the Commonwealth could prove the facts alleged if the case went to trial. On March 19, 2010, the Defendant, Waide Eugene Nolf was residing at 56 Pleasant Street, City of Bradford, McKean County. Also residing in the residence was Tonya Haight, her husband John J. Two doctors testified during a 3-½ hour hearing Wednesday on whether accused murderer Waide Nolf was coerced into confessing that he killed a mother and her infant daughter in March of last year. Dr. Christine Martone testified for the defense, and said Nolf’s desire to please other people could have caused him to confess even if he didn’t commit the crimes. Dr. Barbara Ziv testified for the prosecution, and said she does not believe Nolf is mentally retarded and the claim that he confessed to please the police is nothing more than speculation. McKean County District attorney Ray Learn tells WESB and The HERO the defense and prosecution were each given 20 days to submit supplemental briefs. A former teacher of accused killer Waide Nolf testified during a hearing this morning about his cognitive abilities. Patty Sanfilippo is a former special education teacher for the Bradford Area School District. Judge John Pavlock ordered that the Commonwealth has 20 days to submit an amended expert report on Nolf's cognitive abilities and, if needed, the defense has 20 days after that to file an amended expert report. Criminal homicide charges against the Bradford man accused of drowning a woman and her infant her daughter have been bound to court following a preliminary hearing that lasted a little more than an hour this afternoon. 38-year-old Waide Nolf is accused of killing 24-year-old Tonya Haight and 3 ½-week old Tamara Haight on March 19 in the Pleasant Street house they shared with several other people. District Judge Dom Cercone presided over the hearing that was held at the McKean County Courthouse in Smethport. Bradford City Police Chief Chris Lucco, Cpl. Mark Russo of the Pennsylvania State Police and McKean County Coroner Mike Cahill testified for the Commonwealth. Nolf is being held in McKean County Jail without bail.
