For the second year in a row part of the Bradford Mall parking lot will be turned into a carnival. Workers started setting up today and say they expect to open at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

One of the men indicted for the fire-bombing of an Allegany apartment in October has pleaded not guilty to those charges, and to drug charges in a separate case. 21-year-old Gary Coleman is one of six people charged with assault and arson for throwing a Molotov cocktail in an apartment where several St. Bonaventure University students were living on October 17. The second indictment charges Coleman for criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance. On December 8, in Olean, he allegedly possessed and sold crack cocaine. On December 15, in Olean, he allegedly possessed and sold methadone. Coleman is jailed on $200,000 bail. One person has already been sentenced in the bottle-bombing case. Another is scheduled to be sentenced next Monday. Three others have pleaded not guilty.

WARREN — Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati recently held a conference call with state-wide media to discuss his proposal for a local impact fee on Marcellus Shale companies. The proposal is now Senate Bill 1100. “While I recognize that even though the language has been put into legislative form, this issue is still a work in progress,” Scarnati stated. “My main objective with this bill is to ensure our local municipalities, where drilling takes place, receive a fee to assist with road improvements, water and sewage issues, as well as other community enhancements.” According to Scarnati, there has been significant progress made over the past couple of weeks to improve the proposal. “We have and will continue to work with the environmental community, the industry, and local and state officials to make sure we get this bill right,” Scarnati added. “I am hopeful that we will arrive at a final product that will be in the best interest of the citizens of the Commonwealth by summer re...

Pittsburgh – Governor Tom Corbett underwent successful back surgery this morning at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The surgery, performed by orthopaedic spinal specialist Dr. Mark A. Fye and orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Patrick J. DeMeo, was considered to be routine for the treatment of spinal stenosis. The surgeons described the procedure as successful and said Corbett was resting comfortably. Corbett’s wife, Susan, was at the hospital during the procedure. In accordance with articles of the state constitution, Lt. Gov. James Cawley was acting governor while Corbett was under general anesthesia. Corbett was awake and alert by 10:30 a.m. and physicians cleared him to resume the powers and duties of his office. After spending one or two nights in the hospital, Corbett will recuperate for a few days at his home in suburban Pittsburgh. Doctors expect Corbett will return to Harrisburg within the week. A Jamestown woman will spend the next two to six years in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. 20-year-old Christina Head was sentenced this morning in Cattaraugus County Court in connection to the accident that happened last Fourth of July weekend in the Town of Coldspring. 49-year-old Alfred Jones was a passenger in Head’s vehicle. Cattaraugus County District Attorney Lori Rieman says Head knew Jones was dead and left the crash scene without reporting it.

State police believe a Bradford man is responsible for several acts of vandalism by vehicle early Saturday morning along Routes 46, 646, Champlin Hill and Summit roads in Foster, Keating and Otto townships. They say the man drove his truck thru several residential lawns, hit a wishing well, damaged a wooden fence and destroyed several mailboxes. The total number of victims and dollar amount of the damage is not available yet.

City police are investigating a burglary at the Bradford Coin Shop that happened between 6 o’clock Friday night and noon on Saturday, according to a fax sent to WESB and The HERO. Police say the burglar or burglars took several binders filled with various coins and various foreign currencies. The coins are from the 1800s to the present day. Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to contact the City of Bradford Police Department.

Due to Governor Corbett’s back surgery this week, Radio PA was forced to postpone the first edition of the “Ask the Governor” program that was scheduled for taping on Wednesday, May 18th. All US and Pennsylvania flags at state buildings will be flown at half-staff on Sunday to recognize National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Private homes and businesses are also encouraged to fly flags at half-staff. On Friday, fallen police officers from this region were honored in St. Marys. Those remembered included Dave Distrola of Bradford, Steve Jerman of Kane and Carl Whippo of Johnsonburg.

Thunder, lightning and torrential downpours didn't dampen the spirits of Bradford Area High School prom-goers Friday night, as you can tell from the beautiful Jamie Teribery. Elizabeth Behan and Nick Franco were crowned Prom Queen and Prom King.

A plane crashed in a wooded area of Benezette Township at just before 6 o’clock Friday night, killing the 60-year-old pilot. State police say the man from Connecticut was the only person on the plane. They did not release his name. Police and the Bennetts Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance were called to the scene at 5:55 p.m., according to a fax sent to WESB and The HERO by state police. Elk County Coroner Lou Radkowski pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Flash flooding is occurring throughout McKean County, including the City of Bradford, as well as in Cattaraugus County, particularly in the Salamanca area. Motorists are being advised to use caution.

A Bradford man is in jail for allegedly raping a person younger than 16. Bradford City Police charged 19-year-old Anthony Kremer with felony counts of rape by forcible compulsion, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. Kremer was arraigned by District Judge Bill Todd this afternoon and is in jail on $75,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in front of District Judge Dominic Cercone.

Harrisburg – Governor Tom Corbett will undergo back surgery for treatment of spinal stenosis on Monday morning, May 16, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The surgery, to be performed by orthopaedic spinal specialist Dr. Mark A. Fye and orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Patrick J. DeMeo, is considered to be a routine procedure, but will require Corbett to stay in the hospital one or two days. Corbett expects to resume his duties by Tuesday, while recuperating at his home in Shaler Township, and return to Harrisburg by the end of the week. During the time when the governor is under general anesthesia, Lt. Gov. James Cawley will be “acting governor,’’ in accordance with articles of the state constitution, until Corbett is able to resume the powers and duties of the office. HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today reminded spring gobbler hunters they can take advantage of full-day hunting – from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset – beginning Monday, May 16. The full-day spring gobbler hours were approved by the Board of Game Commissioners last year, as part of the 2010-11 seasons and bag limits package. Under the change, legal hunting hours from the opening day of the spring gobbler season through the third Saturday (April 30-May 14) are one-half hour before sunrise until noon. However, hunting hours for the remainder of the season (May 16-31) are from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. “Although all-day hunting will disturb some nesting hens, the impact will be minimal because all-day hours will cover only the last two weeks of the season,” said Mary Jo Casalena, Game Commission wild turkey biologist. “By then, hunting pressure decreases and most hens are in their l...
