While the late summer into early fall is the prime season for fog, under the right conditions, fog can be a problem in the early spring as well. Folks in parts of the Northeast have certainly received an education on this in recent days. According to AccuWeather.com's Chief Operating Officer Evan Myers, "The pattern is very similar to what occurs in September, in terms of the long nights, moisture and temperature." "It's a blend of radiation and advection fog in this case," Myers added. Radiation fog occurs when marginally moist air in place cools to its saturation point at night and is most common in the autumn. An inmate in the Chautauqua County Jail is facing additional charges for allegedly breaking another inmate’s jaw. Sheriff’s deputies say 28-year-old Simon Gogolack of Wellsville assaulted 32-year-old James Patrick of Jamestown in the jail. Patrick had to be treated at ECMC for a broken jaw and broken tooth. Gogolack is now charged with second degree assault and remains behind bars. He was originally jailed for criminal sale of a controlled substance. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

A Maine man has pleaded guilty to raping and kidnapping a woman in the Allegheny National Forest, and could spend the rest of his life in prison. 37-year-old Mike Beaulieu entered the plea today in federal court in Erie. On August 3, 2010, Beaulieu approached the couple as they were having a picnic lunch. At gunpoint, he tied up the 23-year-old man with duct tape, then kidnapped the 20-year-old woman, took her to the Red Bridge area of the forest in McKean County and raped her. U.S. District Judge Sean McLaughlin accepted the plea and set sentencing for July 26. McLaughlin said because Beaulieu's prior record is so lengthy his criminal-history score is the highest possible in the federal court system. The score, as well as the violent nature of his crimes, means his possible sentence will be 37 years to life in prison, according to federal sentencing guidelines. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Keep pinching yourself if you must, but all you'll get out of it is a nasty bruise. This isn't a dream. St. Bonaventure (31-3) is in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The Bonnies survived a last-gasp 3-pointer and defeated 13th-seeded Marist, 66-63, Tuesday night in the Second Round of the tournament. They will face top-seeded Notre Dame (32-3) Sunday in Raleigh, N.C at 2:30 p.m. Senior Jessica Jenkins drilled six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, and sophomore Doris Ortega (13 points) grabbed 10 rebounds to lead a dominant performance on the boards by the fifth-seeded Bonnies, who outrebounded Marist, 40-26. "Coach told me before the game I'd be able to crash the boards because they ball watch sometimes, and I knew how important those (extra) possessions could be," said Ortega, who had five of SBU's 15 offensive rebounds. The man accused of assaulting a couple in the Allegheny National Forest, and then kidnapping and raping the woman, is expected to plead guilty today in federal court in Erie. 37-year-old Mike Beaulieu of Anson, Maine, allegedly held the couple at gunpoint on August 3, 2010, at the Kinzua Point Information Center, tied the man up with duct tape then took the woman to the Red Bridge area of the forest in McKean County. State police originally charged Beaulieu, but federal prosecutors soon took over and a grand jury indicted him on charges of aggravated sexual abuse, kidnapping, using a firearm during a violent crime and illegally possessing a firearm. Beaulieu has a felony sex offender record in Maine, which prohibits him from possessing a firearm. He was picked up about a week after the incident in New Brunswick, Canada. Bradford Area Public Library President and CEO Tamara McIntyre says – because of all the programs and services it offers – the library should be the heart of the community. During a report to the community Monday night, she talked about another goal she has. My ultimate goal is to make this library the best small library in the country," she said. "To do that we need the support of the staff, the board (of directors) and the communitiy. I believe we can do that." The library has added a number of new programs in the past few months, and will continue to add more, as well as update the library website to make it more interactive. Board members said funding will continue to be a challenge, but the Derby Gala fundraiser, which goes toward the endowment fund, is helping. The Gala is May 5 at the Pennhills Club. Several men who noticed their neighbors’ house was on fire helped rescue two people inside the house, one of whom was unconscious. The fire on East Main Street in Sherman, New York, was reported at 7:30 this morning. Before firefighters arrived four men who were working on the roof of a neighboring house learned that 63-year-old James and 58-year-old Norma Sittnick were trapped in a second floor bedroom. They took their ladders to the house and, with help from another neighbor, got to the Sittnicks. Sheriff’s deputies say when they and firefighters arrived they took over the rescue. James Sittnick was unconscious when he was removed from the house. Neither of the Sittnicks had any apparent burns. They were first taken to UPMC Hamot, but were then both taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for treatment of smoke inhalation. Authorities believe the fire started in a rear entry room to the house and appears to be an accident, but they will wait until they can interview the Sittnicks be...

A University of Pittsburgh at Bradford philosophy professor is the co-editor of a new book that explores the philosophy of the blues. “Blues – Philosophy for Everyone: Thinking Deep about Feeling Low” is the first book published by Dr. Jesse Steinberg, assistant professor of philosophy. It is part of Wiley- Blackwell’s “Philosophy for Everyone” series, which strives to involve non-philosophers in philosophy through another interest such as coffee, wine, gardening, fashion, yoga or the blues. Wiley-Blackwell also publishes the popular “Dummies” series. Steinberg said he was approached about editing the volume after meeting the series editor Fritz Allhof at a philosophy convention, where the two had talked about Steinberg’s love for the blues, especially Muddy Watters, B.B. Simone. Imaginative sets, colorful costumes, unique props and, of course, fabulous student talent will grace the stage of the Rigas Family Theater at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts Wednesday, March 21, through Saturday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. each night. A Salamanca woman is facing charges for going into the Seneca Allegany Casino after she had been banned from the property in January. Sheriff’s deputies say at 5:45 a.m. on Monday 51-year-old Joyce Bergstrom became combative when they were arresting her for criminal trespass. Now she’s also charged with resisting arrest. Andrew Nicholson has been named to the NABC Division I All-District First Team for the second year in a row. The senior forward was named to the District 4 team and is one of 240 student-athletes who represent the finest basketball players across America. The Atlantic-10 Player of the Year finished out his career at St. Bonaventure ranked second on the all-time scoring list with 2,103 total career points. He also ranked second in blocked shots (244), second in field goal percentage (57.5) and fourth in rebounds (887) in the school's history. Nicholson led the Bonnies to their first NCAA Tournament in 12 years, guiding SBU with a career-high four 3-pointers en route to 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in a 66-63setback to Florida State. Breea Willingham, a former St. Bonaventure University professor, will return to campus this month to speak about race, class and gender oppression of women in prison. Her talk, “Write On, Sister! How Incarcerated Women Use Writing to Reclaim and Define Their Power and Identity,” will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in Dresser Auditorium of the John J. Murphy Professional Building. Willingham will examine how writing helps incarcerated women reclaim and define their power and identity, and clarifies the meaning of their prison experience. The program is free and open to all. A Silver Creek resident was flown to ECMC after a collision when a vehicle caught on fire on Route 5 this afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies say they were called at just after 1 p.m. when a vehicle driven by 74-year-old Ollie Park of Silver Creek turned into the path of a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Jamie Waclawski of Dunkirk and they collided. The fire in Waclawski’s vehicle started shortly after the collision. Waclawski and his two passengers were taken to Lakeshore Hospital for treatment. Park was flown to ECMC by helicopter. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico, the U.S. Geological Survey says. The earthquake was felt strongly in Mexico City, according to a Reuters witness. Mexico's National Seismological Survey said the temblor had an epicenter southwest of Ometepec. The quake was located 120 miles east of Acapulco. A person at Acapulco City Hall told NBC News that they felt the quake but had no reports of injuries or damages yet. It was six miles (10 kilometers) underground. Judge John Cleland has ordered the attorney general’s office to turn over the phone numbers and addresses of the people who have accused Jerry Sandusky of sexually abusing them when they were children. Late last week Sandusky’s lawyer Joe Amendola filed a motion saying it would be difficult to locate the accusers and interview them without getting contact information from prosecutors. In his order released late this morning, Cleland also required prosecutors to disclose any juvenile adjudication records that might help Amendola attack the credibility of any witness the state plans to call at trial. Although Amendola had argued that several accusers used drugs and alcohol as juveniles, which might affect their recollections of events, Cleland’s order says the state doesn’t have to turn those over. Prosecutors do, however, have to turn over psychological evaluations of the accusers, but can’t use any information in them without prior approval from the court. Sandusky is accused of sexual...

HARRISBURG -- The Department of Environmental Protection will host online information sessions on implementing Act 13, which Governor Tom Corbett signed into law in February to further protect the environment and place more stringent regulations on the natural gas drilling industry. “Act 13 reaffirms our strong commitment to safe, responsible, environmentally sensitive and transparent natural gas development here in Pennsylvania,” DEP Secretary Mike Krancer said. “Our intent with these sessions is to explain the law and answer whatever questions people may have.” Act 13’s environmental provisions for unconventional gas operations, which take effect April 16, include increased setbacks from buildings and waterways; limited development in floodplains; and increased time and distance provisions in which gas drillers are presumed liable for water contamination until evidence proves otherwise, among other things.
