A Forestville man is dead after a motorcycle crash Monday night on Route 5 in Sheridan. State Police say a motorcycle operated by 38-year-old Michael Case was traveling at a high rate of speed at about 10 p.m. when the bike went out of control and hit a guardrail. Case was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed for more than four hours while police investigated. This is the second fatal motorcycle crash in two days in Chautauqua County. 27-year-old Jonathon Lutgen of Stow died early Sunday morning after crashing his bike in the town of Ellicott. A Salamanca man has been sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison for breaking into a Great Valley house. 23-year-old Travis Gilbert of Salamanca broke into the home on April 28, 2011, and stole several items. A Salamanca woman has been sentenced to five years’ probation after pleading guilty to attempted burglary. 55-year-old Barbara Dexter broke into a Salamanca building on June 23, 2011. A Delevan, New York, man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child. 19-year-old Patrick Potter had sexual contact with a child younger than 11 during April and May of last year. Potter is scheduled for sentencing on August 6. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

A Port Allegany man has been fined for $1,000 for endangering the welfare of a child. 31-year-old Harold Graves was originally also charged with sexual conduct against a child for incidents that happened between June of 2007 and April of 2009 in Hinsdale. A Salamanca man has pleaded guilty to punching a police officer. 23-year-old Kurtis Dowdy punched a police officer who was responding to a domestic dispute on November 20 in Salamanca. More than 40 years removed from his Commencement in the Reilly Center, Dr. Charles Dougherty told more than 700 graduating students Sunday morning that the university will shape them in ways they might not yet foresee. “St. Bonaventure will shape your choices, and while it may be in subtle ways, what you learned here will guide you in some of the most important decisions of your life,” said Dougherty, a 1971 alumnus and president of Duquesne University for the past 10 years. Dougherty said students at what many people perceive to be an isolated location in Olean will often be far more worldly and open-minded than students graduating from metropolitan campuses. Police are investigating a crash at around noon Sunday outside the Moose Club in Emporium. They say a car driven by 51-year-old Katherine Huggler of Roulette was traveling on Route 120 at 11:55 a.m. when it went off the road and hit the poles on the outside of the Moose Club overhang. The car then hit the utility pole on the north side of the road. Police said the car had major damage. Huggler and a passenger suffered unspecified injuries. The Bradford Area School District is expected to introduce it proposed budget for the 2012-2013 school year during its meeting tonight. For the 11th year in a row, the school board will not be raising taxes if the budget is approved. The board meets at 7 o’clock tonight in Fretz Middle School. A Chautauqua County man is dead after his speeding motorcycle crashed in the Town of Ellicott early Sunday morning. Police say they spotted 27-year-old Jonathon Lutgen of Stow at around 3:40 a.m. and said he was driving at 84 miles an hour. He went through an intersection at 100 miles an hour and crashed about 100 yards past the intersection. Lutgen was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is being performed at ECMC in Buffalo. Meadville - The Department of Environmental Protection has levied a $33,065 fine against Herbert L. Hasbrouck and Marion L. Hasbrouck of Oil Creek Township, Crawford County, and Hasbrouck Sand and Gravel Inc. of Titusville, Crawford County, for violations of the Solid Waste Management Act related to the improper handling and disposal of waste tires. “Proper disposal of waste is essential to preserving the quality of Pennsylvania’s air, land and water,” DEP Northwest Regional Director Kelly Burch said. “The Solid Waste Management Act provides a mechanism for DEP to monitor and enforce appropriate disposal methods.” In January 2011, DEP conducted an inspection of the Hasbrouck property and observed a large pile of incinerated tires that had been reduced to ashes. Smoke and flames were visible during the inspection and additional waste tires were scattered throughout the burn area. Police have released more information about the teenager who allegedly stole an SUV and took troopers on a chase onto Interstate 80. They say the 17-year-old boy took the keys to an SUV belonging to a Kane woman Sunday night at the Abraxas facility in Marienville, then drove on routes 66 and 322, where a trooper saw him and followed him onto Interstate 80. The boy lost control in Jefferson County at around 10:45 p.m., crashed into a guardrail and hit another vehicle. The people in the other vehicle were not hurt. The teen was taken to Brookville Hospital and, when he was released, was taken back to Cornell Abraxas. He is facing charges of escape, fleeing and eluding, theft and assault. As we told you last week, students from Oswayo Valley Elementary School sang the National Anthem when the Pirates played thhe Nationals Wednesday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. 66 students from 4th And 5th grade were under the direction of music teacher Mrs. Beth Lewis. The Oswayo Valley School District strives to insure that all students know the words to the Anthem so it is always a large part of the music program. Performing the anthem at a Pirates baseball game emphasizes the importance to the students. It is quite an honor for our students and we are proud of their accomplishments, stated Principal Carolyn Fugate. We believe it will be a a meaningful part of their education and a memorable experience. This is our second appearance at PNC Park. The first time was in 2010. Students were accompanied by teachers, staff and parents on the overnight trip to Pittsburgh which included a tour of Heinz Field and the Pittsburgh Zoo. A Brooklyn, New York, man has been cited for causing an accident that dumped 40,000 pounds of shaved metal onto his car Friday afternoon on I-86 between Salamanca and Red House. Sheriff’s deputies say 29-year-old Ricardo Roman Jr. moved from the driving lane to the passing lane and hit the front end of a tractor-trailer driven by 47-year-old Robert Winchell of Wellsville, causing the truck to go out of control and flip over onto the car. The tractor-trailer landed on its side and blocked the entire eastbound lane of traffic, and spilled the load of metal shavings onto the road. Roman and Winchell were both taken to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Portville Truck led the cleanup effort. A Chautauqua County man is accused of having 74 marijuana plants in his house, as well as more than a pound of processed and packaged pot. Earlier this month members of the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force searched the Sheridan home of 50-year-old Jeffrey Bacho and seized the plants. He was charged with unlawfully growing marijuana and criminal possession of marijuana. He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

UPDATE: 6:35 p.m. -- A tractor-trailer tipped over, spilling its load of shaved steel onto a car on I-86 this afternoon. Both the driver of the car and the truck were taken to area hospitals. State police say their injuries are considered non-life-threatening. Troopers say the accident happened between Red House and Salamanca (Exits 19 and 20) when the car made an abrupt lane change. The tractor-trailer driver tried to avoid hitting the car but flipped over onto its side. At one point, traffic was backed up for about two miles while crews try to clean up the 40,000 pounds of shaved steel. Emergency and cleanup crews are still on the scene at this hour. ~~~ An accident on I-86 near Exit 19 in the Town of Red House has traffic backed up for about two miles.
