“Governor Paterson gave an uplifting speech that focused on working together. It was very refreshing and very encouraging. We have serious challenges to solve in the days ahead. At the top of the list is passing the state budget. I’m concerned because there are $3.2 billion in new tax hikes on the table that will be detrimental to our families. The worst thing to do in an economic downturn is to raise taxes. We need a budget that controls spending and gives our taxpayers some relief. 03/18/08 - Committee Favors Marriage Amendment
The State Senate Judiciary Committee has voted in favor of the Pennsylvania Marriage Protection Amendment. Senate Bill 1250 would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to ensure that marriage in Pennsylvania remains the union of husband and wife, and prevents any equivalent to marriage using a different name. Michael Geer, president of the Pennsylvania Family Institute, thanked Senate President Pro Tem Joe Scarnati for attending the meeting and voting in support of the bill. Pennsylvania's Catholic Bishops also applauded Scarnati. Opponents of the measure, including advocates for children and victims of domestic violence, have argued that the amendment would prevent same-sex couples and unmarried heterosexual couples from adopting. They also say it would discourage employers from offering domestic-partner benefits. The legislation ultimately must pass both chambers of the legislature in two successive sessions, and then goes to a vote of the people at the ballot box. 27 states have passed Marriage Protection Amendments.
