Pitt-Bradford's Baily's Beads Chosen Most Outstanding University Literary Magazine

The 2011 edition of Baily’s Beads, the literary magazine of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, has been chosen Most Outstanding University Literary Magazine for 2011 by the American Scholastic Press Association.

It is the highest honor the association can award a college literary magazine. Last year the magazine received the award for colleges in its enrollment category, but this was the first year it was the overall winner. The magazine also received first place with special merit, a distinction it also earned in 2004, 2005 and 2008.

The 2011 issue was edited by Sarah Dorben, a 2011 writing graduate, and Michael Reeder, a 2011 writing graduate from Murrysville who also served as layout editor. The issue also earned a gold medalist certificate from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, which it also earned in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Dr. Nancy McCabe, associate professor of writing and director of the writing program, is advisor for the staff, which also included Arpad Hervanek, artist, a biology major from Bradford; Steve Abplanalp, a 2011 writing graduate; Bruno Cognetti, a former writing student; Andrew Cauley, a writing major from Bradford; Seth Cheatle, an English major; Jarrett Clark, a former writing student; Clarice Rutledge, a writing and public relations major from Monroeville; Josh Ellson, a radiological science major from Export; Kevin Erdelack, a public relations and writing major from Cheswick; Ellen Goos, an interdisciplinary arts major from Orwigsburg; Nick Jones, a 2011 writing graduate; Kimberly Katilius, a former writing student; Mackenzee Miller, a writing major from Attica, N.Y.; James Segee, a writing major from Bradford; and Stewart Skeel, a 2011 writing graduate..

“We had a lot of bumps in the road putting together this issue, including hours of editing and a last-minute complete redesign,” McCabe said. “It’s nice to see all of that effort rewarded.”

While receiving accolades for the 2011 issue, the staff will unveil the 2012 issue during a free reception at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Mukaiyama Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons.

Also, work has begun on the 2013 issue. The staff of the 2013 Baily’s Beads will read submissions of poetry, short stories, novel excerpts, memoir, travel writing, personal essays, plays and translations through March 30.

Work should have a cover sheet with the author’s name, address, phone number, email address and the title and genre of the work. The author’s name should not appear anywhere else on the manuscript.

Poetry should be single-spaced, while prose should be double-spaced. Writers may submit up to 20 pages. Electronic submissions to bailys@pitt.edu are preferred. Submissions may also be dropped off at 103 Blaisdell Hall or mailed to Baily’s Beads, 300 Campus Dr., Bradford, Pa., 16701.
