Biology, Athletics and Recreation, Student-
Athletes Named Beyond Brand Champions

– Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday celebrated faculty and staff who “go beyond” and chose winners among the student body who submitted homemade Pitt-Bradford videos.

At the 6th annual Go Beyond Brand Party, the biology program, the athletics and recreation office, and student-athletes were honored as this year’s Brand Champions.

Selected by Dr. Livingston Alexander, Pitt-Bradford’s president, the Brand Champions are those people who best outwardly live the university’s brand promise, which includes providing a safe, friendly and personalized campus environment and reaching beyond expectations.

Biology faculty were chosen for involving students in research and guiding them through the graduate school process as well as mentoring younger children in the community by organizing and volunteering in the Girls in Engineering Math and Science (GEMS) and Science in Motion programs.

Faculty members honored were Dr. Mary Mulcahy, associate professor of biology; Dr. David Merwine, assistant professor of biology; Mary Blaine Prince, visiting professor of biology; Dr. Om Singh, assistant professor of biology; and Dr. Lauren Yaich, associate professor of biology.

Athletics and recreation was recognized for its excellence in coaching, athletic performance, volunteerism, advances in athletic coverage, and providing a wide array of intramural and outdoor recreation experiences for all students.

Members of the athletics staff honored were Lori Mazza, director of athletics and recreational sports; Ed Bahan, head men and women’s swimming coach; Charles Bell, head men’s and women’s cross-country coach; Molly Brennan, head women’s basketball coach; Bret Butler, head baseball coach; John Eaton, assistant athletic trainer; Scott Elliott, sports information director; Angela Honeck, head athletic trainer; Michael Idland, head women’s soccer coach; Rich Kahle, fitness manager and facilities coordinator; Mick McMillan, pool director and intramural director; Britt Moore, head men’s basketball coach; Darek Panol, head men’s soccer coach; Tina Phillips, head volleyball and softball coach; Susan Schenfield, head men’s and women’s tennis coach; Betty Spindler, secretary; and Keith Stauffer, head men’s golf coach.

Student athletes were recognized not only for their dedication to sport and academics, but also to the community. Student-athletes completed more than 400 hours of community service last semester, including 182 hours by the men’s soccer team. Pitt-Bradford athletes were also recently honored by the NCAA for their work with CARE for Children.

Also during the brand celebration, the campus community viewed and voted on videos students created as “video postcards” from Pitt-Bradford.

First place winner was Matt Tuzynski, a chemistry major from Clarks Mills, who won an iPad 2.

Second place winner was Jay Leipheimer, a pre-medicine student from Transfer, who won a basket of Pitt-Bradford gear.

Third place was Olivia Fernandes, an athletic training major from Erie, who won a bag of Pitt beach gear.
