Baseball Player from St. Marys at
Spring Training with LA Dodgers

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Two former St. Bonaventure baseball players, Jesse Bosnik and Ryan Skellie, are once again beginning their seasons playing ball on the professional level.

Bosnik, who played his final season at Bonaventure in 2010, is currently at Spring Training with the Los Angeles Dodgers and is expected to leave camp next week and be assigned to the club's Single-A affiliate Great Lakes Loons in Michigan, where he has spent the previous two seasons.

Since making the decision to leave Bonaventure early and go pro in 2010, Bosnik has hit .239 during his first three years in the Minor Leagues. Bosnik's run began in the Rookie League in 2010, where he played in 55 games and moved from shortstop to third base with the Ogden Raptors in the Pioneer League (South). With the Raptors, Bosnik hit .253 in 194 at bats. He started the 2011 season in Single-A with the Loons. In his first year of A-ball, Bosnik played in 100 games with a .232 batting average and .935 fielding percentage at the hot corner.

Last season with the Loons, Bosnik played in 106 games, hit .239 and tied his 2011 total of eight home runs. He was an annoyance on the base paths for opposing pitchers, as he finished second on the team in stolen bases with 21 in 25 attempts. His professional play improved greatly from 2011, as he enhanced his run total by 16 (31 in '11 to 47 in '12), hit total by 11 (78 to 89), RBI total by two (42 to 44) and cut down the number of strikeouts significantly (79 to 67).

During his junior year in 2010 – his final year with the Bonnies – the St. Marys, Pa. native hit .387, had 50 runs scored, with 20 doubles and knocked 11 home runs. Bosnik became the first player in program history to finish with at least 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases in the same season. After a historic season playing with the Brown and White during his junior year, the shortstop and team captain was drafted by the Dodgers in the 13th Round of the 2010 Major League Amateur Draft. Bosnik returned to Bonaventure during the offseason in 2011 and 2012, and graduated with a degree in Business in May of 2012.

As for Skellie, the former St. Bonaventure outfielder who graduated in 2012, has resigned with the Florence Freedom, an independent professional baseball team in the Frontier League.

The Erie, Pa. native will be entering his second season with the Freedom. Skellie batted .239 with 12 RBI in his rookie season with the team. The Freedom advanced to the championship series of the Frontier League before falling in the finals. Skellie, who is currently working on a Master's Degree from SUNY Brockport, will join the Freedom in May as the Frontier League schedule runs from mid May through early September.

Skellie finished his career at St. Bonaventure with a .284 batting average, 102 RBI and 12 home runs. He concluded his four-year career with the Brown and White having started 163 of his 177 games played. In his senior year, Skellie led the Bonnies in home runs (five), slugging percentage (.462) and stolen bases (five). He finished second on the Bona roster in triples (three) and total bases (84), and concluded the campaign third on the team in batting average (.313), hits (57) and RBI (31).

The Frontier League was established in 1993 to serve the West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southeast Ohio areas, and has grown to as far west as Missouri. The league is split into two divisions with a total of 14 teams for the 2013 season, including an international franchise based in London, Ontario. Over its 19-year history, the Frontier League has produced 22 Major League Baseball players.
