Mischief at Acid Mine Treatment Plant

Someone got into the Brandy Camp Acid Mine Treatment plant in Elk County and then opened and closed gates that control water.

State police say the incident happened between 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon and 7 o’clock this morning when the person got through a gap in a security fence. The person then opened a gate that controls groundwater coming into the plant, and closed a gate controlling water exiting a pond on the property.

When the incoming water level dropped to a predetermined level an automatic control system shut down the plant to prevent damage to any equipment. Police say there as not monetary loss, and there was no environmental damage.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Ridgway-based state police at 776-6136.
