Multimedia Art Exhibition that Explores
Icelandic Landscape to Open at Pitt-Bradford

A multimedia exhibition about the soundscape of Iceland will open next week at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s KOA Art Gallery.

Montana native Burke Jam created the exhibition, “FRACTURE,” after spending a year exploring, listening to, and recording the sounds of Iceland’s landscape. In addition to field recordings, the show includes Jam’s photographs and drawings, which explore seasonal inconsistencies of light, geologic cycles and sub-tectonic movement.

“My intention is to create an experiential understanding of the physical and natural world,” Jam said.

Jam was raised in rural Montana and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art in 2006 and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture in 2013 from the University of Montana. He received a Fulbright Grant for 2013-14 to travel and work in Iceland, where he spent a year researching the relationship between physical place and environmental sound.

Currently he teaches at Portland (Ore.) State University in Oregon and works as a smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service.

A gallery opening will take place at noon Feb. 6 in the KOA Lobby of Blaisdell Hall. The free exhibition will run through March 6. The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.
